Found rats in Airbnb 🐀, got no refund because I didn’t notify them within 24 hrs

Title should be self explanatory. Booked an Airbnb a couple of weekends ago (4.8+ rating) and was visited by rats stealing food in the middle of the night. Notified the host, they didn’t care. Called Airbnb 2 days later, the customer support person I talked to said I didn’t notify Airbnb within 24 hours and said that their policy states they won’t do anything unless I do that. I did notify the host, they basically ignored me. Customer service rep went on PTO for 3 days and said she will follow up after (is Airbnb employing more than 1 CS?). So after another week of waiting they sent me some long email story about how they won’t do anything. Not that it matters but I had over a dozen 5-star reviews from prior hosts and had used Airbnb for 8+ years. Terrible customer service, will definitely stick to hotels moving forward, not worth the extreme hassle.

Sir this is a Wendy’s

Disney kunnaii Apr 23, 2022

No you won’t. Hotels are worse

Uber buildđŸ˜ŽđŸ„¶ OP Apr 23, 2022

Some are, but if you book a 4 star hotel you likely won’t find rats

Disney maybe you stay at super 8 hotels?

You are like a woman that ate almost all steak in the restaurant. Then complained that it was bland and wanted full money back..

They won’t really do anything if you notify them within 24 hours in my experience as well. I rented an Airbnb in Mexico for a month and we got there and it was covered in ants. In the bed, in the cabinets with all of the dishes, etc. Contacted them and they said I needed to wait 1-2 days for them to work it out with the host. Pleased to get moved to a new place etc, but no go. Health hazard so bounced and had to find a new place last minute. Took 2 months of fighting to get a 50% refund. I hate Airbnb

Uber buildđŸ˜ŽđŸ„¶ OP Apr 23, 2022

Thanks for the tip, that’s a good idea actually

💯. Bear in mind that they might kick you off the platform for doing so but from your post it sounds like you're pretty much over them

Get Chase trifecta. Transfer points to Hyatt. Stay there?

Reckitt Benckiser SVAM67 Apr 23, 2022

How good is chase trifecta? How does it compare against other Chase offerings. What is annual maintenance cost for the card?

PwC trp4773 Apr 23, 2022

Chase freedom - 5x points on Rotating quarterly categories. This quarter it is amazon so I already got myself a gift card for max value allowed. Chase sapphire preferred - This is your travel and dining card. I cheaped out with preferred coz too poor to afford reserve. Annual fee of $95 good sign on points bonus during scamdemic. 3x on dining and 2x on travel. Chase freedom unlimited- Your catch all card. 1.5x on everything. If you have a spouse ask her to get an Amex gold and these 4 cards should be good enough to max your benefits from credit cards. Chase points transfer 1:1 to transfer partners like star alliance and Hyatt. Hyatt has best redemption value as much as almost 2cpp. Read up more about it on Ask Seby or points guy.

Airbnb is highly host centric and does not care for their customers I initially booked a listing in New York - later found bugs in bathroom ; dog fur everywhere . I did complain within 24hrs , but terrible customer service- it was escalated to higher management but same response They said the listing mentioned dog - so I am like - I don’t sleep on dog fur Ended up loosing 400 for the entire booking - we then booked a decent hotel in Manhattan

Tc or GTFO

Not surprised with your rat experience OP. Airbnbs are extremely shitty these days. They have huge costs. Not as cheap anymore compared to hotels. Stay in a good hotel than an Airbnb.

100% agreed

Red Hat t💭cloud101 Apr 23, 2022

Agreed, it’s just $30-40 difference per night in a decent hotel which can be trusted than risking your security in an unknown Airbnb! Been there done that, never going to unknown superhost on Airbnb again!

I have never understood why well paid professionals use Airbnb. Too risky. It's not just about sanitary conditions but also security. Who knows what creep has installed what camera in the bedroom ?

GrubHub qep Apr 23, 2022

I use it for long term stays since there aren't very many alternatives. Haven't got burned yet, but when I do I expect to get fucked by customer service. Last year I stayed in a place for 2 months, and noticed about a week into it that tiles were broken underneath this big mat in the kitchen. It was too late to do anything really, just had to hope the host wouldn't try to act like it was me who broke the tiles. Luckily nothing happened in the end though, but I realized I could have gotten fucked. Now I take a long video going thru everything when I check into one.

Credit Suisse vptr Apr 23, 2022

Yeah . I mean for long term stays .. it makes sense ... But for 2-3 days, hotels are better than Airbnb ... Unless we are talking about cheap hotels .
