Friend got laid off for bullshit reason

I got a friend that got laid off (more like fired). He/she got fired for “performance”, but a coworker that still works there was told that he/she was actually fired because of “compatibility issues with the manager”. Will this tarnish their future prospects? If so, is there any legal recourse that can be taken?

🙀 does your friend have any creditable source that is willing to testify or show evidence ?

AppDynamics UwHv82 OP Aug 6, 2019

yeah they have a few former coworkers that knew the situation. they never got any negative performance reviews. also their manager outright told another employee the real reason they were let go was because the manager and my friend did not get along.

I hate to break it to you but that’s a legit reason.

Twitter Oomnj Aug 6, 2019

Err let it go. It’s a booming job market / go elsewhere.

AppDynamics UwHv82 OP Aug 6, 2019

mainly wondering if this will fuck up their chances elsewhere

Twitter Oomnj Aug 6, 2019

Not really tbh. No one is going to go around telling other people to not hire your friend. Just make up a good story.

Cisco fdet4247 Aug 6, 2019

Report it to HR. The only reason you can give at Cisco for being LR’d is that the business is restructuring and your position has been impacted. They cannot hire back at the same grade and job title and location for a long period of time after a LR. Hopefully you documented exactly what the manager said.

oh this was actually a friend that works at a smaller startup. sorry for the confusion as everyone refers to themselves as “their friend”

Microsoft cgroup Aug 11, 2019

@fdet, that’s not true. I know people being LRed joiing some other Bu

VMware // TODO: Aug 6, 2019

Hmm, actually, do you even need a reason to get fired? And why does this reason matter?

AppDynamics UwHv82 OP Aug 6, 2019

don’t want this on their record or for them to miss out on future prospects due to “performance”

Apple tWBu16 Aug 11, 2019

People don’t have records. They have resumes. And you can put whatever you want on yours.

How was the severance tho?

AppDynamics UwHv82 OP Aug 6, 2019

super shit, less than a month

Apple ST8Pr1d3 Aug 6, 2019

At-will employment.

I’m down

Apple APmcth Aug 6, 2019

Tbh can’t do much here. Things like these fly by in smaller companies and there are always shitty managers. I am actually surprised your friend dint see this coming unless they did not know that they dint get along with the manager

LinkedIn gassoup Aug 11, 2019

Can easily happen at LinkedIn too, I've seen it

My understanding is, in the US, unless you have a contract you can be fired for any reason or no reason as long as you are not fired for a discriminatory reason.....that said, more established companies will usually have a "legitimate" reason to avoid problems hence PIPs etc....

Under federal law, yes. Some states have stronger protection, most don't.

Salesforce gPte64 Aug 11, 2019

I think the only state that isn’t at-will is Montana.

Microsoft rubaduba Aug 6, 2019

Meh.. move on

Microsoft idknbd Aug 6, 2019

No legal recourse. You don't need a valid reason to fire anybody. If your friend doesn't tell anybody they were fired, nobody will know.

Uber MnkyDLuffy Aug 11, 2019

This, I’ve been fired and so has my wife, it’s no biggie, just move on unless you had a huge amount of stock vesting and thus standing to sue.
