I am a Mechanical Engineer working at a manufacturing plant. I want to switch my field to Robotics Software Engineer. I have taking coursera courses to learn ML, OOP C++, Python, Data Structures and Algorithms. I am planning on doing a part-time masters in CS as well. I have seen Udacity courses too but haven’t taken any of them. Does anyone have an advice or experience that you can share? #engineering #software #robotics #swe #selfdrivingcars #tesla #amazon
For anyone that looks this up later, I studied Mechanical Engineering and work in software now. I did a masters in robotics right after I finished undergrad and focused on machine learning. Most companies that were interested in my background were AV companies but now I work for a general ML company as a SWE. The biggest things would be getting a role in which you can do some level of software engineering and then leverage that to get interviews/something to talk about for other tech companies for SWE interviews. I think a masters in CS will set you up well for the transition. For anyone that can’t do a CS masters due to not having the prerequisite courses, a masters in robotics or EE may be an alternative option but it may be more difficult to immediately break into traditional SWE roles.
