I have been consulting (IT projects directly with customers) for about 10 years. about 5 years of development experience before that. Will probably be able to pay off my mortgage in about 7. I am currently seen as a senior lead in my group, living well but with an unpredictable travel component associated with the job. Would you leave that behind, go on an international relocation with family and kids, to take a relatively entry level SWE FAANG job with a TC of around 270k in seattle? net pay is about 85% more than what I make now, but cost of living is 20% more and housing costs double - will probably take 20 years or more to pay off my mortgage (unless I get promoted or whatever) yoe: >15 as stated above ps I am ignoring my wifes income for the purposes of this discussion, because for her the situation would be similar
Sounds like a good deal. You can eliminate the travel. Is the downlevel what bothers you the most? Just remind yourself of what you get in exchange-WLB and higher TC. You can use your leadership skills in any role even entry level, and it will most likely help in getting quick promotions.
This is exactly the rationale I’ve been trying to use to convince myself. However the follow up thinking also scared me a bit: what if I actually fail? It is not just me anymore to suffer the consequences
The downlevel is a bit extreme and does bother me a bit too. But not much. The fact I will struggle to buy a house - something I was about to succeed at here - is probably what bothers me the most
I am curious to know if the community has more input to offer on this situation ...

What does it mean to have a bunch of McKinsey contractors hired in "strategy" roles
Would do it if wife's job is sorted out as well. Is the FAANG offering the wife a job too?
Nope. But I hear there’s plenty of work available. She doesn’t work in IT, though
