Any FE engineer is going to be the first to be replaced by AI. The only web devs who still stand a chance are full stack/ BE devs. Seriously though. I created an entire responsive front-end with infinity scroll and other features using just ChatGPT. While it helps with creating back-end too, it wasn't anywhere near as easy.
What do you think FEs do?
I think this guy still thinks fe is just landing pages. There’s much more to it.
I'd you think FE IS JUST a pretty website and dumb HTML, you are in for a wide awakening.
Go on…
Yeah please awaken me
Same for BE, chatGPT was able to write most of queries.
Very few large scale backend engineers write queries.
Chat gpt can’t even tell me which is the correct technology to use. I have to design a backend service with an expected availability of 99.9%, p99.9 latency at 100ms with no special GPU processing requirement and requires very minimal ephemeral storage. Can it tell me the correct native aws compute platform to use for this? Ask ChatGPT this and it will list you all AWS compute platforms.
Maybe work that was already outsourced to agencies.
Lol. The market is desperate for senior frontend engineers atm. I was sure that the market was going to be saturated by bootcampers but looks like that is not the case. There are actually not many of senior fe out there.
Why? Do FE engineers usually switch away to BE for more career growth?
No, people switch to BE because BE is easier than FE. Most BE people dont even know how to center div.
How do we get it to generate code and UI for entire pages though? I'm looking to work on some saas product but my FE skills is sub par.
What kind of saas product are your working on?
Interesting take. I think backend will go before frontend. Backend was already becoming a commoditized service. AI will just accelerate that. The way UI development is done will certainly change dramatically with AI, but no one is creating web apps with a single AI prompt. Frontend engineers will continue to exist, but they will be able to move way faster leveraging AI.
Depends on what kind of backend, Distributed programming is hard problem
I agree about distributed programming. And I certainly don't think backend (or frontend) will be replaced within Big Tech, where needs are more specialized and niche. But for the majority of other companies, you're talking about having a SQL db, maybe redis, and then a CRUD http interface.
The fact that no one even here understands that ChatGPT is just a glorified next word/character autocomplete, is baffling to me... We are supposed to be the smart minority. How can't people see it?
We are, but have you talked with people out there? The same people who are afraid of chatgpt becoming skynet, think the earth is flat, vaccines have microchips and JFK Jr is alive. Even if I think low of ourselves we still come out on top of what's out there.
Entry-level / bootcamp-grad level FE work will be gone since any competent mid level FE dev would be able to do the basic landing page kind of work quickly so you won't need as many FE junior devs. Mid or senior will remain.

Do you need React and Vue knowledge to use GPT to make a website using this framework?
Yes. It will be taught in high school web design courses. It’s coming man.
