I am curious if frontend software developers hit the limit earlier than backend people. Is one specializing in frontend in their career not a good idea?
It’s not a good idea. Many of the people I know find it much harder to get promoted down the line.
I suppose same for mobile devs then too?
Yes
Depends. If you’re an extraordinary engineer, it’s easier to stand out and get promoted. If you’re mediocre, then it doesn’t matter
Front end has a lot you can really drill into. Have you master accessibility? Webpack? Babel? JavaScript? TypeScript? Really depends on your “limit” and TC wise I’m earning 190. I’m happy with that, hope to earn more as I learn more and grow.
I'm hoping to pursue a front end career as well. How many YOE do you have and what is a good area to dig deep in?
4 YOE. I’d say I focused on performance and accessibility.
Mobile developers tend to thrive in startup and be successful entrepreneurs. If you are able to pull that off, definitely better career wise. If you want to climb corp ladders backend is better.
How about Snapchat? Do backend thrive the most
I'd say Snap is mobile heavy. Now it starts to invest more on backend.
Not that I’ve experienced, but you have to pivot deeper into architecture side of things & out of feature dev.
FE has a much lower ceiling than BE. If you want to go far in your career, I recommend stick with BE.
