I recently got an offer from Amazon to join as Sr. Product Manager - Technical at G6. I was looking to GTFO based on my experiences with old group. But recently there was a reorg and my current group is really great and has increased responsibilities for me. Now I'm wondering if it is worthwhile to leave for Amazon at all? G6 PMTs are plenty in AWS and wonder if I will be lost in the sea. I've spent a decade at Intel, so my original reason for GTFO was to pursue new experiences. Now I'm starting to have second thoughts. TC current 210k. Prospective : 236k. It is not a big difference. Any BKMs?
Intel Oregon to Amazon Seattle? Any relocation comp? Are you grade 8 at Intel? True, the comp bump isn't a big difference and if you have to uproot your family, it would be a big hassle..
There are many Sr. Product manager at Amazon. Depending on the team, manager, project and org it can be black and white experience.... so be careful what you are getting into!
Would also need to consider in the fact that Seattle and vicinity are much more expensive than Portland. Tax wise the income tax - sales tax would balance out, so not much difference at the end of the day. Also one big thing that you would compromise on is work life balance. You can kiss that goodbye when you join AMZN.
Run! Don’t work here!
If you want to live peacefully and want WLB stay. If you want to work your ass off with youngsters then go, but have a path.. get ready to move in a apt.
Anything but amzn
Amazon is a great company that teaches you a lot. It’s factual and simple. WLB is dependent on team but poor in AWS. After Amazon, you can go anywhere. Startups prefer amazon employees more than anyone else for example. So for people who tell you run, they simply are in a bad place or just should leave (or may have already left like the fb person above).... FYI i ran away from fb cuz I thought it was shit, and no I was a GE several times so don’t hold grudges ... point is, it’s all personal opinion and your own perspective but one thing that can not be denied is having also amazon on your resume is great
Yeah. It is a matter of choosing the right team and setting expectations and execution on the tasks. Pressures of the job is something that I will have to get used to it anywhere I go in the industry.
Former amzn PM no you can’t go anywhere don’t drink the koolaid I had same opportunities upon leaving that I did before joining, amzn is not a top tier company the bar was way low for engineers and managers/PMs things are very broken there priority goes to having human in the loop to pretend like things work, PMs spend their days in war rooms, I left because new projects wouldn’t even start and people would be blamed and pip’d it’s a political bloated mess and honestly a garbage company IMO much happier where I am now. Spend my time now working on new initiatives getting them off the ground at fast pace and once in a while checking how low my vested RSUs sink in valuation by the day.
Thanks a lot for your honest assessment. It has been very illuminating. WLB is definitely a sacrifice and the position I'm not sure is definitely that is super exciting compared to the one that I have. But I'm leaning towards leaving mainly as regret minimization framework.
I would jump ship since there is a significant opportunity to increase your TC at AMZN. Obviously, you need to give up the work life balance that Intel offers.
