I’ve seen a few roles posted here and there for G security roles in Chicago. I have a few contacts at G but none in security roles so they had little information. I’ve worked for a few start ups but always wanted to see if I could make it at a FAANG but also now getting a little further in my career(~7YOE) I’m not sure whether I’d like the way FAANGs stack rank people and other consequences of the larger environment. I see a lot of information about software engineers but curious about how G security infrastructure and security/compliance roles function. Just happy to connect and expand my network, not looking for a job change in the short term so it’s not about referrals or “leverage”.#cybersecurity #security #chicago
If by G you're talking about google then I wouldn't be as concerned about stack ranking or things like that. There always will be some degree of politics or jockeying for visibility and impact but if you're mostly self-driven and independent you should be fine at upper L4-L5. Do you know what role or org you're looking at? EIP will differ from ISE which will differ from the compliance folks.
How are the interviews for ISE. Also is this same as product security engineer?
ISE interviews are pretty straightforward mix of domain knowledge, coding, and one behavioral. Coding bar is lower than SWE, but depends a lot on the interviewer. Expect probably basic data structures, maybe simple algorithm. Not sure about the product security engineer title, I don't know if that is its own ladder or what.
