GM Level8s?
Hello All, Are there any GM level 8 on here that can recommend a good promotion path? Is there room for promotion in ultracruise department at MPG? I like the work and the WLB and want to be more influential. What would be a good route to take to do so? Role: Controls Engineer Level: 7a TC: 130k (115k base 15k bonus) Yoe: MS+7 #tech #detroitauto #ford #gm #waymo #tesla

If you want to be 8 level you need to be either very smart , be the person to solve complex technical problems and ideally have a name for yourself outside the company. Or learn to kiss / lick some serious ass. The other option is to apply for an 8th level and hopefully you get it.
How does having a name outside the company help if your goal is to grow inside your company ? I mean at the time of hire maybe but not sure how ?

No worries 👍 my bad. I joined GM from Ford. Now if you need to go yo level 8 1. Get really good performance review the prior year you want to move 2. Try to get to that 5% raise mark annual raise in other words closer to level 8B entry point of salary. Closer you are higher the chances. 3. Network network network 4. Apply for level 8 in other Teams - higher chances of getting and much easier 5. There is a fixed number of level 8 per team so unless that position is free you can't get it in your own team or any other team Good luck !

7a range starts at 110k. When did you join GM ? yours is fair for 7yoe. Once you are in the system there is not much you can do about your salary. Don't worry base depends on too many factors it's not apple to Apple. It generally takes 10+ years to get to 7a 7yoe is probably the faster route to get to 7a. Good job !
