I have been offered a software engineering role at GM in Warren. I am not sure what level I need to be offered with my profile. Kindly help YOE - 4 Offer - 100k base and 10 percent bonus Level - 6B for software Current tc - 90k but on track for promotion by year end Can someone let me know if I can ask to be considered for 6A and if 6B is the right level? Also how long does it take to jump levels from 6B->6A and then to 7? #Michigan #automotive #generalmotors #ford #fiatchryslerautomobiles #software #offer #aptiv #nexteerautomotive
This is a great offer. Amazon guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Its 6A pay, but you'll want to be 6B so that when you get promoted you'll get another 8% salary increase to 6A. This is a really solid offer. 2 years or so to go from 6B to 6A. Probably 3-4 years and a team change to go from 6A to 7B Benefits probably blow magna out of the water, too.
Thanks for that. You are right, the benefits are really good. I was just worried about the level I am coming in at. With a Masters and 4 years, do you think 6B is the right level? Also, I am due for promotion at my current org to a Senior engineer by end of year. So wanted to understand the levels better. Also how easy is it to move around in the organisation?
Truthfully, level doesn't matter. For that salary, I'd rather be high 6B than a mid 6A. I make less than you and I'm at the midrange for 6A. It'll take a few years to get promoted to 7, but you're already in the L7 payrange so I don't see why it matters. Very easy to move around- generally when you move from 6 to 7 you'll have to make a move to a new org. Lots of cross functionality.
Low. You should be getting 120K base and a 10 percent bonus. Auto companies are cheap, they need to pay more. They have all the money in the world.
i am around 350 TC
Chattanooga?
Why don’t you consider APTIV? It’s the place for software engineers.
What’s their pay like?
No its not. I left for GM. You will leave too when you see the state of the autonomous program.
That's a good offer for GM. For other companies? Eh. You could get more somewhere else. If you have other offers, try negotiating
warren near detroit?
yes
ooohh. warren. lovely
This is a solid offer for sure for that location! Don’t listen to this FAANG boys. They don’t understand it’s not the Bay Area and it’s an automotive company. And auto companies are cheap because they actually make something you can feel and touch. That takes resources, buying parts from supplier, setting up dealerships, cost of quality is ridiculous, prototyping, and all that stuff. After all that profit margins are so thin. All that so that people can afford those cars. But I can’t explain that to you Amazon guy. All I can tell you is spend a day in an automotive factory and see what goes in there to make just one truck or car. I agree they can raise the pay levels but nothing like what FAANG people make probably 5-10% more than what it is now. But it is what it is. I think it’s a solid offer for Midwest region.
nah don’t settle. They pay fucking low and it needs to end. They sit on billions. If they want good devs they can pay for it
It applies to all engineers then! They can’t just pay more to devs and pay less to all other engineers in the organization. There are other engineers too in this world.
That’s a good GM offer, but it saddens me how much some Michigan companies get away with paying 50% below market rate
OP. are you at magna off port st in plymouth?
That's pretty good for 6b.
Especially with a promotion to 6a after a year

Seems low but I don't know much about warren. Ask for more and try to get levarage by getting more offers.
I agree. These non-FAANG folks just take anything, lol.
Lol that’s classist AF Nojangles. And douche-y.
