I have been working in a few companies from big to small, from Finance to Tech and everytime I see an ex-McKinsey consultant joining in leadership role, the whole culture is destroyed. Ex-McKinsey managers are ruthless political who endlessly engaging in turf wars at the expense of the companies they joined. They suck the line blood out of the organization to build their empires. They started to make people feel like in hunger games and instill fear accross the company. I have quit a few companies that was good but turned up side down after an ex-McKinsey consultant joining. Why are companies keep hiring these consultants into leadership roles?
Other consulting firms are ok?
Good at strategy and analysis as ICs, bad at managing people, toxic to culture.
The problem is most of them likely have no idea how to contribute any meaningful work. They have been paid to BS their whole careers in consulting
Google? Sundar
Best (worst?) example of an ex-McKinsey manager ever.
I would think of it like private equity. They are sculptors of an existing thing to make it look good, but they can’t grow or create worth shit. That’s why you never see a McKinsey person as a founder
Doordash ceo/founder is formerly mckinsey
Fair enough, you won’t find many I think.
I would speculate that places that are hiring McKinsey folks into leadership are looking for execs who will make these kinds of changes. I.e., if things were going well, they wouldn't be brought in
Not always true IMO. McKinsey had a very strong brand for a very long time, still does in many exec circles. Google hired Sundar Pichai as a Product Manager in 2004, the year of their IPO. He became the CEO in 2015.
I mean, if they were that good, McKinsey wouldn't have laid off its employees
You seem to be mistaking smart and clairvoyant.
Completely agree. Copy-pasting a comment I made on another thread titled “Google is dead?” where I shared my experience with ex-McKinsey. “I worked at Google in Ads and Commerce from 2014-2019. When I started things were still very Googley, strong business, great vision, great talent, highly motivated to succeed. Patrick Pitchet was CFO and ran the business side with amazing results and an emphasis on maintaining their unique culture. Larry and Sergey were both heavily involved and still ran weekly TGIFs from Charlie’s Café in Mountain View. Times were good. By the time I left, Sundar had taken over as CEO with his characteristic lack of charisma and vision that made Balmer amazing by comparison. Ruth Porat had taken over as CFO and immediately, though slowly and steadily started cutting costs and benefits and putting her Wall Street first brand on everything she touched. Around this time they made the changes to the company mission to relegate “Don’t be Evil” to a footnote at the end instead of where it used to be, prominently up front. By the time I left, I looked up seven levels in my org chart and found exclusively ex-McKinsey consultants all the way up from my immediate manager all the way up to Sundar Pichai, CEO. McKinsey types not only lack vision, they are ruthlessly political. They mark their domain like a dog pissing on a fire hydrant. Then they have turf wars to build their empires at the expense of the company. They are parasites who suck the life blood out of once great companies. If you work for a company that starts hiring ex-McKinsey folks as managers, run for the hills. Whatever culture created the value that originally made the company great will be gone before you know it. Replaced with toxic politics and a new Wall Street mantra of shareholder value over everything that made the company successful in the first place.”
McKinsey attracts pricks same with private equity
