I wonder how much TC Rocket Engineers earn, in companies like SpaceX. I think we can all agree that Rocket engineering is harder than Software Engineering, so I'm curious if Rocket Engineers earn more than SWEs, and if so, by how much. #spacex
It's probably harder but it's also more glamorous to the average person and exclusive. Not many places you can work at as a rocket engineer other than NASA, SpaceX, BO, and few positions at Boeing/defense companies.
They consistently earn less, if not significantly less. I used to work in the space industry (briefly at SpaceX as well) - I would generally agree with you that it is a harder discipline than software, but the industry as a whole pays pretty poorly. SWEs also have the benefit of their work being able to scale at a magnitude just not possible with hardware, which is in part why SWEs can demand so much more money. SpaceX in particular is known within the industry for underpaying because they have a reputation that allows for it. People will work there just because of the amazing work they are doing and the career potential it has for you if you work there for a few years. Not saying it isn't worth it, it's just not an industry you work in if you only want to make big $$$.
Harder? I mean it's not exactly Rocket Sci.... err Brain Surgery
Brain rockets. Probably coming down the pipeline.
"I think we can all agree that Rocket engineering is harder than Software Engineering" You must be joking. Solid propellant rockets have zero moving parts. Liquid is not far ahead.
Aerospace engineers have significantly less TC. base pay is lower than FAANG, and they don't usually get any stocks. SpaceX will work you more than Citadel. the Musk philosophy is "work more and get paid less". have several friends working 60-80 hours/week there and they recommend anyone with a family to not work there. you can find better work life balance for similar pay (to SpaceX) at somewhere like Boeing, Lockheed, Northrup, Raytheon
I’m sorry, are you saying that, at SpaceX, aerospace engineers don’t get equity? Because that’s completely fucking ridiculous. The *cafe staff* get equity. I hate to call bullshit so directly, but if you’re claiming that, then you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Sounds like there’s an ocean between you and comprehension
peanuts... I know you think harder Eng == more money....wrong supply and demand so again peanuts!
Lvl 4 w 7yoe structural engineer in rocket industry only ~165k. depending on additional yoe and advanced degrees you could possibly ~175k around southern CA. I left for the west coast from Midwest. Relocation+ 25k sign on bonus still peanuts to SWE. Another downside is going to west coast the relocation only goes so far cause Midwest home prices are 🥜 compared to west coast. Then again I sold my home early 2022 free of commission with relocation. I’d probably would never see those gains if I didn’t sell then. TC at GE structures engineer 95K. I’m not comfortable to say my current company as It is a medium sized company where I can easily be found.
