Doesn’t seem that bad judging by Zillow

Oracle o(n^n)o Mar 16, 2022

Keep in mind property tax is 3% there vs 1.2% avg most are used too.

Booz Allen Hamilton aY2d9k Mar 16, 2022

That’s good context, definitely makes things more expensive

Recently moved to Austin with the plan to buy a house. Have been following prices on Zillow from past 6 months and have never seen such a drastic increase in the prices of the house in such a short period of time. I used to see the good houses in the range between 500k-800k and now it has raised to over a million in a span of 6 months. It’s crazy.

It increased crazily till May be q3 of 2021. Prices have actually started to stabilize a bit after that. There is increase but very nominal.

I'd say with TC 280, you shouldn't have a problem finding decent living in Austin ...like, at all

Move to Dallas, TX

Please do consider 2.5-3% property tax and high sales tax etc.. I should have done my analysis before moving here. Austin 650 k ~ 1 M house everywhere else because of Tax. I need to wait at least a year before moving, so, renting for now.

Booz Allen Hamilton aY2d9k Mar 17, 2022

How high is the sales tax?

Expedia Group DEEEC Mar 17, 2022

2.5 - 3 as i mentioned

Roku Natu Mar 18, 2022

That’s only true for new communities. If you are buying a old house, the taxes are from 2 to 2.3 Also Sales tax is less than Seattle or Cali. Plus no state tax here. Overall it’s still decent city to start a family. Don’t recommend if you are single though.

Amazon hhfhdssss Mar 18, 2022

Sales tax is barely lower and doesn’t matter as much as property tax. Also, many established neighborhoods are higher than 2.3.

Roku Natu Mar 18, 2022

How about State tax?

Apple bacone Mar 19, 2022

Well, you weren’t complaining when $GOOGL was 50% up YOY at one point 😉
