Position was ML scientist. Had 1st phone interview with the director of data science. She had no knowledge of ML, so was casual chat. Then had conversation with engineering director. It was good, he knew ML and asked me a questions on various ML topics from traditional ML to deep learning topics like autoencoders. It went very well. Recruiter then reached out to me for on-site. I asked them compensation for the position and said my expectations is around 300k and I already have an offer close to it. She said the position pays around 200k that includes base and performance bonus of 10%. RSU is only for ppl in director level and beyond. She said she will talk with the hiring manager and get back to me on this. Never got back.

To be fair, this is Williams-Sonoma. These traditional retailers (especially one that sells kitchenware) can't compete with real tech companies in comp and don't know the value that good tech workers can provide.
They are a highly profitable company. It is not that they can’t compete, but they have the culture of paying low to individual contributors. Neither Walmart nor Target are tech companies, they at least pay a decent salary to their tech workers. Their engineering director was hired from Walmart and I am not sure how he thought it was a good idea to be on the hiring market with that compensation budget.
