Gateless Layoffs

Not far from the sweeping impact of “economic uncertainty” on tech companies everywhere, Gateless (an AI start up first acquired by Kodak and then sold to Guaranteed Rate) has just laid off their entire Data Science & System Engineering department as well as many other employees across the board - myself included. I was hired as a Data Scientist before the end of my senior year of college and started just a few days after graduation in May of 2021. As this was my first “real” job, I guess what I’m looking for is a bit of guidance? I’m kinda freaking tf out right now. My girlfriend and I just signed a lease for an apartment in nyc, and I’ve been able to amass an emergency fund of 16K which is about 2 months salary, but after that I’m broke. I have already updated my resume and started the job hunt but in the current atmosphere, it can get a bit overwhelming. I would really appreciate any advice or recommendations. Any referrals would be incredible. I would post my experience here but don’t want to make this post longer than it already is. TC: 100K YOE: 1.5

The first time I ever got laid off, it hit me like a truck. It felt like someone had died. But you will get through it You say that $16K is two months’ salary, but what really matters is how many months of expenses it will cover. That’s your cushion. You have to remember that there’s a ticking clock, but you can’t panic over it. You mentioned the lease, but be open to the idea that you may have to move to where a job is. Sometimes, that’s all there is. Also, don’t be worried about taking something that’s less than ideal in the short term to bring in some income while you look for something else.

DM if you see anything at Attentive. Also, good advice above. I’d also say consider getting a credit card with 0% APR for a year so you don’t bear interest on expenses (you may also get a few hundred bucks as a signup bonus)
