Hi, I am considering joining GM but at 16 YOE, they offered Level 7A. Does anyone think I can negotiate for L8, they offered me almost same salary where I am at now. Offering 130 plus 13% bonus, I have done masters and going to be part of their new transformation team within closures and body electronics to scale their software development process (agile, SAFe etc.) Can I 1. Negotiate for level 8 2. Negotiate for 160 base 3. Ask for joining bonus 4. what is the car policy at level 8 at GM? How is the warren as a place, can I live there or will I have to put up in Detroit. What are the pros and cons of this place Thanks
GM is a great place to work. I was there for several years in a non-tech role. I don’t think you’ll be able to negotiate an L8 offer. L8’s are people/engineering managers usually with a fairly large team reporting to them. You can try to negotiate the salary but doubt they will offer $160k base to start. GM usually doesn’t offer sign on bonuses. L8’s do get a company car (it used to be every 6 months you get a new car, not sure what the policy is now). If you’re looking for Bay Area tech pay, you won’t get that at GM. The cost of living is much cheaper in Michigan than on the west coast. Your $130k salary will go much further there. You can try to negotiate and ask for $140k salary, but they probably won’t offer much more. I can tell you that GM has a great work life balance and great benefits. 3-4 weeks vacation + 17 paid holidays. If your job is located at the tech center in Warren, there are a ton of nice places to live within 30 minutes. Tons of shopping & restaurants near by too. Good luck!
@JJN1899 - thanks for your input. Not sure if In context of GM’s plan to hire ~2500 people in Warren, can L8 negotiation fly but I’ll give it a try. I agree with you about the other benefits. I want mentioned about some discounts for buying car at L7, not sure how much is that. From your experience, can you please share some places to live near by Warren (apart from Farmington hills as mentioned by RoadtoDA). Thanks
Depends on your budget. There are a ton of places within 30 mins of the tech center but you’d want to move NORTH of Warren. Some cities are: Macomb Township, Washington Township, Shelby Township... they are all pretty nice and a lot of GM employees live there. Farmington Hills is west of the tech center about 45 mins and terrible traffic going that way. You would get a nice GM discount on a new vehicle I don’t know exactly how much as it varies based on each vehicle. But it’s a great discount.
Do you or anyone knows the history of any tech layoff by GM? Though future of automobile looks exciting down the line but good to know their pattern of layoffs. I would want to join only they are doing hiring based on strategic planning and have a history of that. Can people share their views
How did your negotiations go? I ask because I'm going for a 7B at the moment
Can you let me know how your negotiation went for the L8 from L7A ? i have a similar offer with 13 YOE + Master degree. I was intervied for a Manager role and they offered me a similar offer with you.
I couldn’t get L8. What level they agreed for you? I think you can negotiate salary a little bit but not the level based on my experience.
I have not yet heard from them. I do have a potential to be promoted at my current company to a manager role. So, I think they need to match that offer. How about your salary, how much did you negotiate more than what they initially offer?
Hi OP….. did you accept the GM offer. I am in a similar position and wanted to know if the TC can be negotiated. How is your experience in that role so far and living in Detroit. TIA.
I didn’t join as my existing employer retained me. All the best !
Got it. Thank you. But with respect to your negotiations with GM, did they ever increase the TC from what they have offered initially.
No, But I think it depends on role and hiring manager you are working with, most importantly how critical that role is for them.
If you live in Detroit either live in midtown or downtown Detroit There are absolutely other places that you can live though that’s not Detroit Think of Detroit as compton in Cali south side Chicago It’s rough... But in Michigan around the city of warren you have some nice upper class cities that you can live in If you’re Indian for some reason a lot of people end up in Farmington Hills. It’s a nice area but I couldn’t tell you why the population is majority Indian / white people Just don’t live in Detroit because you’ll get taxed Detroit’s city tax I couldn’t really tell you any of the pros as I’m black haha
