Getting foot or something in the door

Good afternoon, I’m 21 years old and Ive been living in San Jose for 2 years and been trying to get into the career I want (Networking) and just having not much luck. I first worked at Autozone for 6 months to start working and get customer service experience. I then went off to look for an IT job, I applied to about 50 before giving up and worked at petco as a groomer to try that for 2 months. Absolutely dreaded it and then couldnt find a job again for a month so I went for something to make money and got a factory job at a ramen factory in san jose. I got fired after 2 months because I wasnt good at manual labor, a week later they then rehired me as IT due to it being in my skills in my resume. Ive been working here for a year and underpaid at 16 an hour. I don’t know what to do/Im lost and ultimately want to get a job in Networking and make a living. If someone has possibly a suggestion or something similar please let me know. Id appreciate it. Thank you, if you read this far.

You gave up at 50? Wow. I remember applying to over 300 and getting back only 4 or 5 calls. That first break is nearly impossible. After that, things are easy.

Correction: If you're Eurasian, things are easy.

^ Dude shut your mouth. Stupid excuses is all I hear. I hate people like you that jump to dumb conclusions and blame on things out of your control for everything. Even if you could factually prove that Eurasians have it easy, then work harder if you aren't Eurasian. There are plenty of nonEurasians that have it "easy".

Try 200-300 applications. You'll be lucky to get 20 first calls. That's my experience a few years ago as entry level non-engineering tech job.

Oh believe me 50 wasnt the only number, i applied to everything I saw before the factory gig. I didnt include that just to shorten it to the point.

Did forget to include I did call them too, I wasnt just waiting for calls from them. When I did they either went for someone else or “I’ll see if we got your application and call you back”.

Do you know anything about Networking? What about settling for something easier in tech. Then try and work your way into networking? Seems to be that if you don’t a degree with networking experience or a job with networking experience you’re SOL

I handle everything tech related at this current job which also includes the network. I don’t have a degree but the current job Im in includes experience in networking.

Get a cert like CCNA. Maybe look at taking a course on it at your local community college. Before doing that you may want to get Network+ which will help you understand the essentials like the OSI model and various protocols.

Is it possible to get a Network+ without an A+?

Rackspace FINf68 Jan 10, 2019

Yes, I did.

Yes, u need certs and/or some technical training. If u tell ms that u are doing all the networking at ur co, that could b making sure the modem resets. If u tell me u have cert X or degree Y I know what it means. Right now I would say your resume does not lead anyone to believe that they should consider u for a networking role.

You are still very young. Just get a CS degree. Believe me nothing is more valuable than a CS degree. You will make a ton more

Have you considered a skilled trade? Union jobs are pretty well paid for things like welders, electricians etc. You can get an apprenticeship at a local union and go from there
