what do you guys think about result of Gilead coronavirus trial today ? #covid-19 #coronavirus
What happened
Gilead Science drug for coronavirus. It showed positive results and market is up today due to that.
Before I did engineering I was a med chemist at Gilead. They know their stuff and the particular type of drug (nucleotide analog) and type of virus (RNA virus) are both fields which they have extensive experience in. Recently, with the development of Gilead’s hcv cure (also an RNA virus), there have been many drugs targeting and curing RNA virus diseases so it’s not a surprise to me. That being said there are some obvious limitations with the drug. For one, it has to be taken intravenously which means you have to be in a hospital to get treatment. If the drug was a pill, everyone could just take it as a preventive measure and this whole thing would be over in like a month. The other problem is that it looks like it’s like Tamiflu (another Gilead drug) where it’s only really effective if you take it early. If you have symptoms it’s unlikely to have much of an effect.
Wow! So you believe in them
I believe that they make good treatments. Whether they make it affordable so that everyone can get it is another question...
It was a very weak result, they didn't have a control group and of two studies they did one showed no benefit, and one showed some modest benefit. Of course they are touting the one that showed modest benefit and being very quiet about the other. I think this will end up in the, "better than nothing" category and not be a miracle cure. Still, if I was seriously sick, better than nothing! But I don't think it will be enough to change social distancing policy.
Now Dr Fauci also recommends Gilead medicine and there is some hope now . Bay Area folks , Gilead is Bay Area company https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/29/health/gilead-sciences-remdesivir-covid-19-treatment/index.html
Gilead is the corporation behind the first (and most widely used) form of PrEP. They charge an arm and a leg for it (thousands of dollars for a 30-day supply), and the doctor that helped me get on it pointed out how terrible this is for people who could use or need PrEP, but don't have insurance.
That’s why these drugs are available via Easy Access Program. If it’s not covered by insurance just ask for it for free lol. But also, it costs over a billion dollars to bring 1 drug to market. So unless we start working for free the medicine we produce has to cost money. Do you work for free? Why should I? We need to pay doctors, auditors, packaging facilities, scientists and so many more. This costs........money.
You said a lot of things there. I'm more concerned about the viruses, and less about your bottom line, which is very high btw. I'm not denying anything you said. My focus is there are plenty of human beings that don't have access to government programs, so they will effectively still be at risk and spreading things around. All y'all's concerns for your green papers mean nothing to someone who might become infected each minute of their day just for being human. This is a humanitarian concern, and unless Gilead is capping their income at ~$1B (per your comment), your apologies are empty. In short, you're definitely not not-for-profit, and it shows, because not everyone can have your stuff.
Seems like a lot of early marketing. Too many false positives. Don't forget the results on the WHO page. I would be wary.
Have you ever made a bug free v1.0 release in your first attempt?
Well, the trail is the QA. This is probably v1.35.3764 lol
