Gimme Google and Google only!

As an engineer, I want to get into Google soooo bad. No other company is remotely even close to being as desirable. I used to be interested in Facebook but I don’t believe in the future of their product and the brand has been shattered. Is there any other company that can come even close to the elite status, brand, and culture of Google? Please convince me out of this Google tunnel vision! TC: 225k

TC at JWN? What’s wrong with them?

The culture has become garbage with the Expedia leadership takeover. The tech adoption is cutting edge but Nordstrom will never be seen as a true tech company. There are of super smart engineers but they always end up leaving after a couple years to FAANG companies. Obviously, Nordstrom is a great poaching ground for everyone else. Updated original post with TC at your request.

That being said, Expedia dropped to the absolute bottom of my list. Their top-down, dictatorship-style, ultra-territorial, low-EQ leaders is a complete turn-off. I miss the older Nordstrom leaders that treated us like humans rather than chess pieces.

Oracle db_king Mar 24, 2019

Ok give it a few years, you’ll grow out of it.

Nordstrom gri43 OP Mar 24, 2019

It’s been over 5 years and it’s only gotten worse! I used to be in love with FB but when only my mom and her friends are its primary users in my life, it lost its allure...

My wife works there and it’s a love hate thing. Overall the company culture is fantastic and like any place, work life balance ebbs. If you are an eng looking for challenge and upside check out my company - Flexport. I am on the business side and we are crushing competition and really need top engineers, product and leadership for both. Good time to negotiate too on your way in too...

On Nordstrom teams, we spend 75% of our time building and maintaining infra and ops. Only maybe 10-15% is in actual coding and business problems. That’s probably how it is everywhere but Google’s established infra and ops sounds magical.

There are lots of companies with similar/better pay, benefits and culture. I guess the main difference is no one covers as much technological ground and depth as Google, but does that really matter at lower than director level?

Nordstrom gri43 OP Mar 24, 2019

I used to think that too. At Nordstrom, we have had engineers join from Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Every time the one principal engineer from Google is mentioned, there’s an automatic respect and holy aura that surrounds his name because “he came from Google.” No other engineer gets that kind of special acknowledgement based on where they came from!

Oracle meHz42 Mar 24, 2019

You think he gets that respect just for being at Google or he is actually good? If he is actually good, does it matter where is he from? Would your respect go down if he was from a no name company? See how shallow you are?

TC of 225k at Nordstrom ? How

Amazon lolwhat Mar 24, 2019

Maybe he's the CEO

Nordstrom gri43 OP Mar 24, 2019

As I mentioned earlier, we have people from Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Our entire leadership staff is pretty much Expedia. Being in the Seattle market, Nordstrom had to increase its pay ranges to hire these people. Isn’t that obvious? 🤦‍♂️

Google worshipped Mar 24, 2019

Haha. Once you join Google, you will be immediately convinced how over hyped it is. I am pretty sure none of the current employee experiences is going to change your mind.

Nordstrom gri43 OP Mar 24, 2019

Oh, I believe you. But hey, as they say, “Google only hires the smartest and brightest,” right? You cannot deny that you will at least be given an interview no matter where you apply. I’ve tried applying to and speaking to a recruiter at Airbnb and Lyft and I cannot even get a reply.

Google worshipped Mar 24, 2019

Smartest and brightest! Lol. No we also hire mediocre ppl a lot. Well it's not that we always get an interview. I have been denied at Airbnb and Lyft as well.

Oracle geez.. Mar 24, 2019

all Google has to do is start laying off its people in large numbers like other large tech companies. The magic will wear off in no time. Don't get carried away.

Tutanota randodata Mar 24, 2019

Inb4 somebody says “lol oracle bro what does he know”

Nordstrom gri43 OP Mar 24, 2019

But that’s never happened. Who the hell judges a company based on what ifs?! 🤦‍♂️

Nordstrom gri43 OP Mar 24, 2019

Oracle == PornHub. Suing Google for use of Java “technology”?! It doesn’t get any lower than that. And trust me, PornHub gets pretty low below the belt, if you know what I mean. 🍆

Oracle geez.. Mar 24, 2019

You clearly are a kid in tech. Wait till you experience a couple of layoffs, bad bosses etc. You will be tempered automatically.

Nordstrom gri43 OP Mar 24, 2019

Oh. I wonder who is listed at the top of this list? Are of these votes from kids as well? “Companies You Would Never Work At (2019 version)” https://us.teamblind.com/s/QUH8TYZt

Uber thoi qua Mar 24, 2019

This is why Google offers are so low nowadays.

Nordstrom gri43 OP Mar 24, 2019

Yeah, I’ve learned they will give low offers but will match/beat any competing offers.

Uber thoi qua Mar 24, 2019

Nope.
