So this fortune 500 company had a big internal announcement that they’re pursuing github copilot and will reduce the development time from 18 months to 6 months for some projects. The leadership asked team members to purse this without thinking it will eat away our jobs. Couple of weeks passed and we got an email that it’s not possible to integrate it into out IDEs/repositories and there’s no path forward and that they’re abandoning it. Big surprise. I’m skeptical any AI would be able to replace a competent engineer. No competent engineer would think another engineer could replace him/her, let alone an AI that someone else designed Tc:180k
Give it time. You think there won’t be massive improvements in just 1-2 years time? Or say 10? I honestly think the writing is on the wall but we’re on a platform of people who all severely want/need to disbelieve.
It is already a boost so I can see a reduction in the number of people needed to do the work. Currently about a 15% boost. I find it great for working through the cold start problem. Right now it is great for getting the initial draft but there is a lot of work afterwards and I don’t see that going away.
Coding will become a commodity that you can learn in one or two days Software "engineers" are screwed
Folks only humans can do what humans can do. Machines can only mimic. Do what humans do to be relevant Ps: swe job will die in 5 years
Your assessment suggests you’re not competent. AI at this point is best used as a tool to enhance the engineer, not replace. The engineers who are enhanced will replace the ones not. Good luck with that though.

Update: Trans Coworker Stealing Breast Milk
Why would a company want to maintain productivity, rather than 3x it by making all the employees more efficient?
No company does. It’s not possible to make everyone 3x productive as well
