I sell things on marketplaces and auction sites and have been saying I make $XX m revenue and a VC told me I was being dishonest bc they assume this is GMV (gross merchandise value), not revenue. That's fine, but I was surprised to learn this. To be honest, it still feels like a great metric regardless of the relatively recent GMV metric being called out or not. I'm trying to make sure I don't become perceived as dishonest again, though, so will define and avoid incorrect use of metrics. Amazon: Given sales on Amazon, what fees should be removed from GMV to find my actual revenue on that channel? All Amazon fees? Non FBA fees? It feels like a bit of a game since I outline all expenses any way. eBay: What about GMV and eBay sales? Exactly the same follow through as Amazon sales? Or does it constitute a slightly different approach? Thoughts from any accountants or e-commerce pros? #finance #cpa #ecommerce
