I'm a mechanical design engineer with few years of exp. Joined Apple PD within the last year and am contemplating to leave once I hit my one year mark. Any recommendations in terms of companies/teams in California? Priority is wlb/ease of taking long vacations > culture > pay > actual work. Heard data center development is really chill and cool work even at tech companies like Meta and Nvidia. Also looking at companies like ASML and Intuitive Surgical. Can anyone that works there provide some input? Are these companies open to hire engineers from other industries as long as they have solid fundamentals? Looking at doing internal transfer at Apple but heard that's basically impossible. Any input is appreciated. TIA! TC 215k. #hardware #Apple #Nvidia #ASML #Meta #IntutiveSurgical
Google is all that and great pay too. I work with PD team and they seem to have decent wlb
Google seems pretty hard to get into rn with limited openings, and no stability with all the layoffs seems like it’ll be taxing on your mental. I also heard Pixel specifically is a dumpster fire. How’s your experience been?
I work in Pixel and it's far from dumpster fire. I'm enjoying it actually, so not sure what that sentiment is about. Layoffs are par for the course, but Pixel is the safest HW bet in Google for now, other than maybe Cloud HW ( not sure about that though). Yeah it's not easy to get into, but keep a lookout for openings. It's a good set of people to work with
Try illumina, low pay but good vacations
You guys don’t seem to be hiring at much either haha. I guess that’s just how the market is rn. How’s culture there? Heard it’s actually sorta intense from someone that worked there
Super chill... I used to work at Intel... So it's day and night....
I’m really interested in hearing what your hours look like. We usually have tight timeline with frequent weekday night meetings with overseas team while being paid 🥜
I hover around 50-60. Definitely better than a lot of ppl on my team
Terrine is semiconductor right? Heard semiconductor industry can be pretty rough
None
Heard Amazon is pretty rough too yiure in lab 126?
Rough work wise or pay wise? What do you mean? I was a mechanical engineer but switched to software
Highly recommend intuitive surgical. Interesting and meaningful work, good wlb, smart colleagues and fairly decent pay.
I don’t really have exp with robotics or any dynamic systems is the problem. My impression with intuitive is that they only look for ppl with those exp, is that accurate?
Depends for which role. For a Software Analyst (which is a robotics control engineer) it's going to be tough to get in if you don't have any background on controls or robotics. If you want to join as an ME EE firmware or SWE fon't necessarily need to have a robotics background.
why do you want to leave Apple, if you don't mind sharing?
Poor wlb and too high pressure for my liking

Did you think about joining aero space or energy companies?
I’m not citizen so no aero unfortunately. I honestly don’t know much about the energy industry, any specific companies you could share? How’s the pay?
Pay scales are not going to be as high as Apple but you can have better WLB , growth on corporate ladder.
