Google | E7 | Offer Eval. Should I move? When?

Ladies, gentlemen and non-binary creatures of all sorts, behold! A hard working work loving 13-yoe ape over here, also known as cheese-egg, invites Blind users and trolls of all kinds to weigh in 🧌 ! And yes, I’m aware of significant overlaps in members of the two aforementioned groups. Have to get back to nice lady/sir recruiter this week. Here is the question: to go, or not to go? Or to find a counter? Joined Meta as IC6 in March. Remote. HCOL. TC when joined 650K (250K base, 20% bonus, 350K/year RSU) + 100K sign-on. Moved to LCOL, still remote. Base took a hit to 220K (less tax, lost ~10K/year actual accounting for tax benefit). Current stock price LCOL TC 480K. Not very satisfied with the team and feel a bit mislead in terms of work I’d be doing, but I still think I can be happy. I was pre-allocated but I asked a lot of questions during the interview stage. Two important things to consider: - I have a straightforward 1-1.5 year path to L7. I worked with the current L8 in my chain for a long time, incl outside of Meta too therefore have some insight. Only L7 on leave, I’m running my shit and 70% of his successfully. - Feedback from touchpoint: great start, targeting GE for next cycle based on my current goals and perf. I think fair, being an SME in the space managed to deliver (measurable) team impact by month 4 and XFN impact at L7 @ month 6. Received Google IC7 verbal Friday. Remote LCOL. TC avg 625K (730K year 1 and 2) + 50K sign-on. 240K base, 25% (60K) bonus, 1.3M RSU front-loaded (33/33/19/15). Matched with the team by the recruiter (first team match call was a good match). TL, work in a reasonably interesting sphere with open-source exposure. If I move most of the sign-on will be used to return Meta’s pro-rated portion of the sign-on. Should I take the offer? Am I missing anything? Live with a fiancée, she’s also WFH (non-tech/non-engineering), not planning kids. Her TC 310K.

🤦‍♂️Share the numbers first.

Blind iOS wiped my message when I selected tags. Added back.

I think that is a great offer that you have. I have L6 SWE offer for Seattle area and lower than yours. Congrats!

Affirm jdnybjd Oct 24, 2022

Thanks for the detailed information, with that we can safely say sure why not.

Meta cheese-egg OP Oct 24, 2022

Commented above.

Meta nda5000 Oct 24, 2022

I think you should switch. If you interviewed you’re already out imo.

Meta cheese-egg OP Oct 25, 2022

I don’t think I agree. When I was interviewing I didn’t know the team they had me in mind for. If it wasn’t something interesting to me I wouldn’t even consider moving.

Are you required to pay the 100k - 7 months of work pre tax or post tax amount? If pretax, it will be about 42k. Post tax it should be around half of that.

Meta cheese-egg OP Oct 24, 2022

Based on what I know Meta is going to do the tax math on their side and request the post-tax amount after I leave. Meaning I’ll use the post-tax Google sign-on to return the post-tax 7-8 month portion of Meta sign-on.

Walmart LqwI2010 Oct 24, 2022

Hmm then still I think it's a good idea to leave for Google. You are having a higher starting point when you request a comp evaluation when you promo to l7 at Google. Since you are joining Google when the stocks are down. They can only go higher as time goes on. Your stock grant value at Meta will continue to look annoying since even if it gains 30%, you will still be down 10%. That's assuming your meta share price was set to about $220.

Meta Xtgy52 Oct 24, 2022

Can you share the total stock grant. I understand that 320k avg/year means you received ~1.3m and will get ~420k/year in the first two years?

Meta cheese-egg OP Oct 24, 2022

Correct, 1.3/4. It’s 325k, I was going for round numbers in the post.

A few really big things here. 1. Your path to e7 in a year is doable at FB. Will take 3 years a Google...minimum. 2. Metadata stock is undervalued. Most people accept this (or think it will tank entirely). The likelihood of your Meta comp rebounding to initial offer is fairly high. I wouldn't leave purely based on this. 3. Meta knows the gap caused by the drop and you will likely get very strong refresher to handle it given your current tragectory.

Meta cheese-egg OP Oct 25, 2022

Had a clarification call with the recruiter today… it’s an L7 offer.

> The likelihood of your Meta comp rebounding to initial offer is fairly high LOOOOOOOOL

Google corona 🦠 Oct 24, 2022

Are you a SWE? Also, what would you like to prioritize? Growth or stability?

Meta cheese-egg OP Oct 24, 2022

SWE. Right now? WLB and stability.

Google corona 🦠 Oct 24, 2022

Google could be good for both depending on the org and team. Which org are you headed to?

Google 🐵🐝s! Oct 24, 2022

Is your LCOL in an HCOL state? Because that base is way out of band for LCOL L6. That said, there are weird spots where the comp region doesn't match reality.

Meta cheese-egg OP Oct 24, 2022

LCOL state.

Google 🐵🐝s! Oct 24, 2022

Delete, it's L7, makes more sense

If you move to Google, how long will it take you to a get a promotion? I'd say if you have a reasonable scope for a promotion where you are, I'd probably think about staying.

Meta L6_PM Oct 25, 2022

Hey OP, would recommend changing your post title to E7 as this is not an E6 offer for a few reasons based on Google's comp bands: - your recruiter said the bonus percentage is 25% - this is only for L7 not L6 - $240k base for remote LCOL is L7 for Google not L6 (L6 max base at Google is 230-240k in HCOL only - this is fixed by location formula) - $1.28M in RSUs for remote LCOL is an L7 offer not an L6 (again fixed by location formula) Either way, based on the above you should accept Google. It's already at L7 saving you 1-1.5 years of work to get the promo at Meta, and L7 external offers at Google are very rare. You can clarify the level with the recruiter over email. Congrats!

Snap PleepPlop Oct 25, 2022

+1 to all this. Do confirm with recruiter that this is for L7 so expectations are set correctly (you'll be held up to L7 bar at perf review). But if this is somehow L6 then there's zero reason to decline because that's crazy pay for lower expectations

Meta cheese-egg OP Oct 25, 2022

Thanks! I clarified, and it is an L7 offer, and I did an L7 loop. Added details below.
