Hello Googlers Have you made the transition from TPM to Engineering Manager within Google? How much time and what kind of effort did it take for you to do that? Asking from the standpoint of evaluating a TPM offer from Google and if it makes sense to move from EM to TPM and if it is even possible to transition back to EM if it is not as interesting. The end of Backdoor Roth?!
Havent seen that happen before. While at some companies like Amazon, it is easy to transition from TPM to EM because Amazon has a bunch of people managers too. But at google most EMs are highly technical and are kind of TLM (at least upto L6). So if you want to move from TPM to EM then you will have to show TLM level work, which I dont think will be possible to do while on a TPM ladder.
