There is an opportunity for me at Oracle (Cloud - Bay area) with a level up and likely 100K+ more TC. Much shorter commute as well. I don't mind working on enterprise software, can fit in any company culture, and don't really care about perks much either. Are there any big downsides in going to Oracle from Google? Also how is WLB at Oracle for IC5? TC: 430
100k+ increase is about 50k after tax. It's a nice chunk though not huge given your current tc. Commute shortening is a huge bonus. If you can find a project there that would keep you engaged enough to come to work every day, it might be well worth it.
Old school vs new school. Depends on what works better for you
What is your current and what level did they offer you?
100k more for the same level? i want go
It is not the same level. It's L6 equivalent
Chekc out http://levels.fyi
Every oracle director I know joined google at L6. Not sure how their IC ladder maps to G.
IC5 and Director are the same level at Oracle. IC5 should maps to L6 too.
What do you think of future of Oracle? Do you think they will build some new products in future which other companies might buy? Their best bet is to continue squeeze revenues from Oracle DB & java which are both dying IMO(many people will disagree but I don't any see any reason why a new company will adapt these technologies). I don't see any reason why you should move from Google to Oracle.
Enterprise software and clients Oracle is targeting will certainly survive remainder of my career. Also why worry about future? Can move on if/when things become ugly. Reasons for me are: - writing software is writing software, I am not doing some cutting edge work that really needs a company like Google. - more TC and a level up, shorter commute as mentioned above.
OP, whats your location & commute? Looks like you are pretty much grinded by it and you are getting short sighted. Working for a. Company like Oracle will be soul crushing.
