I've recently gotten through the interview phase with Google and begun team matching. I had a couple interviews last week but wasn't really into the available roles. Now not sure if recruiter will be able to find another match (she said this directly). L4 SWE with 8 YOE. I have some lead experience at a startup, and had considered trying for L5 but settled on L4. "Hinted at" salary range: ~130k CAD, 15% bonus, 120k stock / 4 years + refreshes. 1) I'm a bit confused as to how the stock and the "refreshes" work. Does this essentially just work out to 30k/year additional compensation? Or should I expect more per year? What would you call the TC of this role? 2) That compensation seemed lower than I'd expected when I first applied. I'd assumed I'd get TC of 200k+ with my YOE, but am I expecting too much? Is it worth considering a move to the US for higher TC? (I should be eligible for TN visa) 3) Recruiter suggested I should consider taking one of the options just to "get into Google" and consider a move in a year or so. Am I making a mistake by risking losing the offer? #google #swe
This offer is shit for SWE. F pays 240+ for E4. With your YOE, you could get E5 easily, which equates to 350-400k. There are other companies that pay more than that. So better to hit pause and don’t fall for the fantasy of the dream job at Google, that the recruiter is trying to weave and trap you into. If > your current comp, take it, but don’t stop interviewing.
Is this true for Canada though? I'm also struggling to find comparisons and I believe the ceiling is just a lot lower here. I've considered what it would take to apply directly into the US.
This is true for Canada. You can go even higher if you apply directly to US but it’s harder.
Wtf my offer was 155k + 320k/4. You need to push for more. Get counter offers, pmuch the only way to negotiate with Google. L4 3 yoe for reference. Also canada
Thanks for this. This is close, well even a bit more than, the offer I was expecting. I may consider putting this on hold and applying to a couple of other companies. Do you know the range I'd need to get in order to get Google to raise their offer? I actually had 3 offers in the past 6 months from smaller companies in the 120-140 TC range, but with them being a bit less would that even be worth being considered as a counter offer?
No I don't think they would bother with that as counter. Unfortunately it's hard in Canada. I was able to get an offer from Wish which was 200k + 395k/4. My suggestion is look for US companies that offer remote. Also try for FB, Amazon, Apple, etc. Deliverr is a startup that gave me a strong offer as well.
U can get 400k+ stock for google l4 in Canada Check out this post! "Offer evaluation - Google vs Wayfair vs Twitter (Software Engineering Career)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/xqvOxP0k
Thanks - looks like the base isn't very negotiable but the stocks are and that's ok with me. Good to know.
You can get Lead at Salesforce for your YoE. it’ll be quite a bit higher than your offer
Wait.. the recruiter themselves mentioned you should take a low offer just to get into Google and then move? That is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. Anyway, if it’s more than you’re making now just take it. It does seem low to me.
My understanding is this is basically just their "usual" L4 offer for engineers in Canada, not that I'm getting a lower than usual offer.
