I am a speaker at an upcoming conference and Google decided to cancel my travel to the conference sighting budget. I had publicised to the inner circle on the topic that’d be presenting (including an opportunity to present my own feature). This would be “step-up” for my resume and give me external visibility for future jobs. I am very tempted to travel with my own money (cross continent) to send a message to the management hierarchy (as they have sent one I feel) and have this on my resume. EDIT: TC is 🥜🥜 it will end up costing me about 0.75-1 month of salary or more. I understand it may have “political vibe”. But the message in the context that conferences are important for personal growth and I had been working towards the conference for more than a month which my local leadership has been in the loop about it. P.s. There is “approved list” for the conf which is mostly execs compiled by the execs. #google #tech
I wouldn't worry what management thinks about it, just do it since you want to increase your brand.
“I am very tempted to travel with my own money (cross continent) to send a message to the management hierarchy” What message do you think this will send?
Would only tell them that not spending money is okay. Motivated employees will travel anyways. lol
Lots of companies are, recesssion is here
Is this really as political as you’re making it out to be? I don’t think management is trying to actively harm your career, they just don’t want to cover the travel expense. So be it, your TC should cover it comfortably.
You should go. And file an expense report. And have them disapprove it.
Why go through the trouble of filing an expense report when you know it won't be approved?
Just to show that you cared enough about something to do it on your own dime. It’s also a signal to upper management that you have a backbone. And who knows, it might even get approved?
How important is this to you? I'm assuming you can afford sponsoring yourself to the conference. If it's worth much to you, I'd say go for it, otherwise no.
