Google Data Science (Generalist) Interview

Have an upcoming technical interview with Google for a Data Science position. Have spoken at length with recruiter about what to expect. For instance, that it's a conversational session and will focus on textbook and applied statistics (probability, hypothesis testing, modeling, regression, etc) as well as knowledge of statistical or scripting language (in this case Python) to manipulate and visual data as necessary to address an analytical scenario. I suspect this will be for L4-L5 level, but can't confirm. Recently graduated with an MS in Data Science, so none of the concepts should be totally foreign, but I've probably already forgotten some of the in-depth details - so I've been doing as much Coursera and other statistical analysis with Python training as I can. Has anyone gone through this interview? If so, what was your experience? It's considered a Data Science, Engineer interview, but the prep information specifically states that it is not SWE. Any insights would be appreciated! TC: $190K YOE: 13

“ Recently graduated with an MS in Data Science, so none of the concepts should be totally foreign, but I've probably already forgotten some of the in-depth details - so I've been doing as much Coursera and other statistical analysis with Python training as I can.” Unless you get lucky in the interview, this is pretty inadequate. Here’s a warm-up question: what’s the joint density of a pair of order statistics sampled independently from a uniform distribution. This is not hard, but needs you to be quite solid in the fundamentals. And this will be a warm-up question, not anything more.

I’d say that’s a hard problem. It’s a problem in Casella Berger and fit for a problem set not an exam much less an interview.

Good luck then! That’s an actual question that Google asked (disguised in some manner). This is also one of the easiest questions in Casella Berger, which in turn not considered anything but a basic book that every stats undergrad from a top 50 program would use (or maybe Hogg and Craig). Fwiw, I did get an IC5 offer from Google, so I’m not exactly exaggerating about the difficulty level.

Thanks for the tips, I also have a generalist DS interview coming up. Questions: -What is the best resource for applied statistics for the Google interview? -How long did the prep take for someone who cracked the interview?
