I see a lot of misleading info on Blind with extremely exaggerated compensation ranges.

Let’s shed some light on the topic with real data points based on random Google engineer responses across the US. The number of respondents is about 2% of the company.

Format is the following:
Level
1% - 10% - 25% - 50% - 75% - 90% - 99%

I.e., the lowest 1%, the lowest 10%, 25 percentile, the median and so on. E.g., for L3 half of the engineers make less than $200k per year, etc.

L3

120 - 125 - 150 - 200 - 220 - 225 - 250

L4

200 - 225 - 240 - 260 - 280 - 300 - 330

L5

250 - 285 - 315 - 330 - 365 - 390 - 450

L6

375 - 400 - 425 - 450 - 480 - 550 - 575

L7

550 - 575 - 625 - 675 - 725 - 750 - 800

Good luck with negotiations :)

PS. Would be great if someone from Facebook compiled the same data based on your internal comp discussion.

I think in blind most of the TC packages come from the Bay Area. That’s why the numbers are so high.

The numbers you see are pretty fresh. So they include all appreciation you could dream of.

What I mean is the spreadsheet's TC column just adds base + bonus + last grant in $. So if the stock appreciates by x% each year even if you get same TC each year for next 4 years, your actual cash flow will be up.

L5 is spot on. I’m only making 330TC, NYC. Could be more, but meh. I’m happy. Nice work OP.

Thanks for the details; a couple of follow up questions. Going by the numbers, more than 50% of L5 gets less than 350K (75% gets less than 365K) and very few L4’s (10%) get above 300K. Am I interpreting the numbers correctly? My hunch was most L5 will get 350-400K and L4’s will get close to 300K (if not more) based on different threads in Blind.

That may be the case indeed, but I tend to believe annonymity, on average, generates these type of incentives.

      That’s correct @a1z2x3c4
Only top 25% of L5 get over 365, and only top 10% of L4 get over 300.
The Blind effect makes people think that’s just an average comp, where in fact it’s far from reality.

A lot of numbers are fueled by grants from 1-2 years ago, many people are overpaid and out of range at Google, Amazon etc. definitely Amazon, I was supposed to get 248k when I accepted the offer, with stock growth I’m getting more like 365k this year. Really amazon didn’t intend to pay me this much, and I’ll cliff out when the original grant ends. I can imagine how some people don’t want to believe the numbers, you’re right but it’s all fueled by stock growth and companies like Intel lose out cause your stock doesn’t grow as much.

50k of AMZN RSUs granted back in 2015 are worth over 200k now. I would be surprised if other companies try to match Amazon’s total comp. Any SDEs from Amazon gotten any offers recently?

I think people on Blind should start posting pics of their W2s without identifying information. And fuzz out the last three digits so HR can't identify you by your pay. I'm not sure I believe some of the numbers I hear.

I think this would be a huge benefit to the tech community if people did this because then we would have more reliable data points to go off of and would negotiate more confidently.
