Google is notoriously known for pushing UX Research over to the back seat, treating Researchers like a good to have vs an important part of the team. The Gemini disaster could have easily been caught had it undergone User testing. Most product leads and engineers at Google work as people “who know it all” deriving ideas and producing roadmaps from their own personal experiences . Is Sundar to be blamed for this no UX culture? This stupidity has gotten the GOOG down. 📉
I’m sure Google’s done testing before releasing it to the public.
Sure. Then either the user is stupid or the UX researcher or the engineer or the PM is stupid. Possibly all. Very telling about who got hired .
Around ~2013, PMs got sick of dogfooders saying "This sucks because of these 3 reasons" and ruining/delaying launches as they responded to feedback. At some point, PMs decided Googlers weren't representative and could be ignored if their feedback wasn't positive. Google launched things quicker since this shift, but quality obviously tanked. Doesn't matter though, the PMs got promoted and that was all that mattered (to them.)
It’s not a UX problem. It’s a degenerate woke culture problem.
Which would have been caught had it been tested.
It really depends on what they tested and the success criteria’s. I’m not sure what was done.
This is the problem of "diversity" meaning only woke employees, and firing anyone who is publically right leaning. Probably hundreds of people saw this obvious flaw, and were scared for their jobs to speak up. The other 95% didn't even see this as a bug.
You have no evidence for any of this conspiracy.
Well since my IQ is in triple digits I can put two and two together. Google is known to be incredibly woke. Probably hundreds of PMs called out how "great" it was the AI kept spitting out POC
OP are you in ux?
Yes . And was at Google. Left last year due to everyone in the team thinking they knew and understood UX. Engineers creating UX wireframes to have fun. PgMs conducting UX Research like they knew what they were doing. It was frustrating seeing it all. So left .
They normally do internal dogfooding and public alpha/betas. My guess is they kept a tight lid on this one because they were paranoid about leaks.
Possible . In which case conducting very confidential, NDA signed user testing and user feedback sessions would have been very helpful. Clearly this product was not tested.
NDAs are hard to enforce and with any sizable pool of users tracking the leaker down would be near impossible. It's also possible they did test but made last minute adjustments as it went out.
Woke dont believein diversity. They think a group of 100% black people is diverse. NO. Diverse means heterogeneous, make of different people and that includes white.
Right . Whatever the term . End users are adept at picking these types of information up and UX Researchers experts at getting users comfortable enough that users share it with them. Certainly either a user feedback not being taken seriously or not taken at all, issue here .
They must have test it to an extend, but somehow believed it was acceptable. They might not have tried to create historical figures.
It extends way beyond historical figures… there’s such a political bias, even in worded prompts. Can’t tell the difference between Elon much and Hitler… as president Biden would say…common man
These types of AI related products need to undergo rigorous testing . Test, improve, repeat very many times . Here clearly someone gave the orders to launch . Potentially to get that adrenaline high, but unfortunately fell on their faces.
trust me its tested intensively. its just that googlers are so detached from reality that everyone either 1. believes this garbage work like a charm for its " 'diversity' 'feature' " or 2. too scared of people in 1 to speak up
2 for sure . Googlers are way too smart for 1. It’s not safe to speak up .
…. Which really brings me to my initial point . Which is UX Research was probably put on the back burner by the person in position and thought like point number 1 . Believes this garbage works….
lol
