In an interesting turn of events, Google invested $300 million in the ChatGPT rival startup, Anthropic. This actually happened back in late 2022 but hasn’t come to light until now. I am curious why Google can’t develop this internally. There are brilliant teams, such as Google Brain and DeepMind. Why Anthropic? Is the entrepreneurial culture degrading? #google
Any company can only focus on top 5 things rest all are hit or miss. Google can just experiment by tipping the 300 million to a startup so they can only focus on one thing.
Multiple shots on goal. An internal effort and an external effort that moves faster with less bureaucracy. By investing they get more visibility into their progress and it positions them to well for partnership or acquisition later.
When a company becomes too huge , politics rule the culture.it becomes harder and harder for good products to be launched when there are 100 people around you who are vying to being you down. Also the middle management is risk averse since they have to hold their job. So it’s easier to invest in smaller startups where growth and people still creating innovative stuff is the core value.
300M vs. 10B investment. Google is just investing the tip for the big market. Microsoft FTW.
Google engineers are so slow and process driven. They will never compete with a startup
does anyone on this thread work in AI in the bay area? (curious given this thread is about AI)
This is basically an acquihire. Most of the money is in cloud credits and the rest is to get a lot of talented people at once instead of paying HR

Why is our country owned by Israel? I don't want my tax dollars fund genocide. How can we stop this nonsense?
Google just can’t do it anymore. It has lost its mojo.
