I am an L3 analyst (in a non-tech ladder) at Google, and in the final stages of process for a Data Scientist role with Amazon (amazon pay team) and have a strong feeling I will get an offer. The process is for Data Scientist II (which I assume is L5 there). Halfway through the process the recruiter told me that they *might* consider me for a higher level as well. I am not happy with my current work at all and looking around within the company didn't help much either. Given these points will it make sense to think about this move? I haven't received a formal offer so don't have the salary details, but considering the role, team, the level and of-course the company change will it make sense? If yes, what kind of hike/package should I expect? YOE: 7+ years I might get promoted in my current role but at the end of 2020 (thanks to the perf deferral) I have seen a lot of posts discouraging people to move from Google to Amazon, so want to understand if staying back at Google is worth the cost of compromising on learning and career growth. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. #Google #Amazon #switch #JobOffer
tc??
Haven't received any offer yet, my current TC is ~ 160 k
Could you share if the role at Amazon is much more technical than your current role? I’m also L3 non tech and would like to improve my data science skills
Yes, the role is definitely more technical than my current one which actually made me apply there. It very difficult to get quality data science work in a non tech ladder at Google.
Are you a business analyst at Google? Could also think about transferring
I am not a business analyst right now, tried transferring but they will only take me in as L3 (which I feel is down-leveling given my experience) and I will have to start all over again. Surprisingly, they will not hire L3 even if the person has all the required skills and knowledge as an L4. Its insane!!
So you’re going from a l3 non-tech analyst to an l5 (is that senior?) data scientist? If so seems like the choice is clear to me... What tc are you being offered?
Sounds like a decent offer if what you’re looking for is to grow your skills!
What was the interview process like at Amazon for the Data Scientist II position?
I had 2 screening rounds, one technical the other on leadership principles. Once that was cleared there were 5 more rounds, one focussed on basic stats and SQL coding, the second on ML and DS concepts and rest 3 focussed on leadership principles and discussion on past projects in depth. There was a lot cross questioning and they tried to understand my projects in depth. All interviewers were really nice and welcoming too.
Thank you for the in depth response I really appreciate it. How did you prepare for the interview ? I have been using leetcode to practicing SQL questions but do not have a good resource to brush up on stats, ML and DS concepts.
Google L3 non tech to Amazon L5 is a good step up. You can gain a couple of years experience at Amazon and be much better off.
Thanks for your comment! That is what I was thinking too, any idea what kind of raise I should expect or ask for? Also, what is the equivalent level for Amazon L5 in Google?
Amazon L5 will be equivalent to a L4 at Google. And since you are moving to a DS role, that's more significant
