Hello. Wondering if I should happily take this offer from Google as is, try to negotiate, or continue to look in my local area (lower COL). If I take the Google offer I'll have to do long-distance with my partner. If I keep looking in the area, I think my cap is 110k. All help is appreciated 👍 Current TC: 85k YOE: 2
I would keep looking. Google is a good resume building but moving is a *i*ch if you don't have to do it.
Take the Google, you’re just starting out.
It’s a good offer for 2 yoe. But always negotiate, I would try to go for $250K, because why not. They will adjust it accordingly. Congrats. You can’t afford to support your partner with that in contrary to a previous comment made here. Don’t saddle yourself with that burden. They will either have to work hard to get a Bay Area or remote job, but you just got an offer from google man, you are worth the effort.
I'll try. What aspect of the offer do you think is most negotiable, base, bonus, or RSUs?
RSU and sign on bonuses are always the most negotiable parts of a package since they don’t affect payroll tax and benefits (401k, unemployment, severance) costs for the company. But you should try to improve base anyway, since that’s what your salary increments will be based on for the rest of your time there.
In this market, that’s a good offer from Google. I would try and push for $160K base if you can, though. For all of their flaws, they’re a good company with plenty of exit opportunities down the line. Moving from Orlando to Sunnyvale is going to be incredibly expensive, so make sure that you budget well and try to save up for a house down the line, OP. Congratulations on the offer and good luck! Thanks for your insight!
Google did layoffs and even started hiring L3s. I don't understand what these companies are doing!
Making the best decision at the moment for stock holders?
Ask for more RSUs if anything. Sign on next of all. Base is likely to be more rigid imo.
$156K base in California is equivalent to $78K in the midwest. Since you're early career, it's a good start to pad your resume for 2-3 years. But as you level up, you'll want to hit a minimum of $400K+ TC to feel as if you're in a different economic class
google and ur career is >>>> being close to partner rn and if they are your partner, they should understand as well :) just fly back every 2 months or smt
I moved to Sunnyvale for a SWE role and had to be long distance from my partner. They were able to move to Sunnyvale later that year. The money, job experience, and company name on resume were 100 percent worth the temporary long distance.
