Recently got my Google NY L4 numbers. Base: 160k Bonus: 15% Equity: 245k front-loaded 33%/33%/22%/12% Sign-on: 20k They say this is final offer after I showed competing offer with 340-380k avg over 4 years. Personally, I do want to go work for google but not sure if it’s worth it given this number and not matched with teams outside of cloud as my initial interest. 1. Is there still room for negotiation? 2. Wondering how much google refresher or other bonus would be like for year 2 beyond? 3. Would it make my comp stay at floated for year1/2 comp assuming no promotion happens? (I do want to try going up to L5, but who knows it would happen or not) 4. Is google still worth joining? (My goal is not coast and chill but continue to grow, and I was at aws prior.) TC: 330-350 (stock appreciation) Yoe: 4-5 Edited: 1. I haven’t decided to take, and recruiter definitely sensed my unhappiness with the comp, tho I don’t think they can do anything about it. 2. Money is not major factor at this point of my life. I think I can still live comfortably assuming 3/4 year comp will be higher than 1/2 years with refresher and other things. Mostly, wanted to work for google and live in NY for a few years. However, if long term career growth is bad, then probably not.

I am Columbia alumni
Wont you make less than what you are currently earning?
Yes, but I don’t have a kid and i have always wanted to try work for google. Also, want to try out New York :) so technically, i might be okay with paycut but want to know what to expect.
You can get more. I was in a similar situation as you. But for the same reason of growth and work in addition to the fact that the TC wasn’t even close to my competing offers, I chose not to move forward.
Even I’m thinking the same, my offer is also less than what my competing offer is, doesn’t make sense to me.
I joined Google last year in a MCOL city and all my numbers were the same as yours except lower base.
Do you join cloud org? How do you like it so far?
Did not join cloud
That's a very low L4 offer
I checked levels.fyi today for nyc. Looks like this is pretty much close to top-band for the new offers logged there. What’s the ideal range?
165-175 base, 300-400 RSUs
Low ball as hell
I was definitely not happy when I heard the number :)
You'll definitely be frustrated. Promotion is slow, growth is stagnant, all good work will be taken by long timers and you'll be stuck making tiny changes. You'll write 10x more lines in a google doc than code and constantly try to demonstrate how ypur trivial changes are super hard. Then you will spend a month doing performance evaluation documentation only to get an average rating. The culture is already being destroyed thanks to bozos coming from Amazon, Uber etc. If you are in cloud, god be with you.
Are you in cloud ☁️?
When you said destroyed culture, do you mean the whole google or cloud specific?
This explains why Google lowballs. They have built such a cult that people even think about taking a paycut. In my opinion it's just a stupid decision unless you're on pip in your current job.
Not in pip. I guess I do fall for the cult/fantasy that might not exist. Money is not really a major driving factor for me at this point. I think i am okay if TC stays floated as 1/2 years.
Hey, I’m also in a similar boat, trying to get L4 in NY. May I know your TM timeline, and how many teams you’ve talked to?
Talked to 4 teams within 1 week after HC decision is out.
May I know what the teams/orgs were? Hoping they are interesting teams
Don’t take a paycut, even if it’s Google. It’s good here but not all rosy and you will be a very small fish in a big ocean, frustrating perf, slower growth. If you are getting $100k more outside, why are you even thinking abt it. Don’t take such critical decisions with emotion, use your brain and consider long term prospects. If you can crack here, you are already good and can get calls from other good places in future.
Money is not really a major driving factor for me at this point. It’s not really a paycut if not considering stock appreciation, and I think I can live comfortably even with 260-280 at this moment of my life (assuming year3/4 will be higher with refresher and everything ). Mostly, I have always wanted to work for google, being it as culture, people, etc. it could definitely eventually all just fantasy I had. Is it really such a bad move for long term career perspective?
Honestly, I think you will be frustrated here.
Can you elaborate the reason?
I was in a similar position as you when I joined and I haven't really enjoyed my time here tbh. Google moves pretty slow on most fronts. If you come in with a chip on your shoulder for higher pay and promo it's going to be a slog. Refreshers won't happen until the following year after joining. Promo won't happen for a minimum of 2 years. Product development is also a lot slower here.
