Update: Google bumped pay to $170k base, 15% bonus, $418k RSU/4, 50k signon. Matched with a different team that is well known and reputed. I accepted. Also idk why but my username was updated to OOjl11. Got an offer from Google at L4: $160k base, 15% annual bonus, $351k RSU/4, 20k signon. This was their initial offer. Currently waiting on a competing offer from Citadel before negotiating (they said around $450k). I’m currently E4 at FB making around $210k since the stock shitted itself. I may have a shot at E5 next half. One of the teams I matched with at Google said I can start leading one of their teams and have a shot for L5 within 1-2 years. A couple questions: 1. What are the expectations like for L4 transitioning to L5 at google? 2. Is this small bump in pay even worth jumping for? 3. What’s the max offer you guys have seen from Google at this level? 4. Any tips for negotiating? YOE: 9 months If you know who I am, pls don’t dox. You’re free to dm to confirm though.
9mo experience?
yes.
👍
450k per year for a sde ii? That's impressive. I cancelled my Citadel interviews once I got offers from Facebook and Google, what have I done lol
No offer in writing yet, though. Yeah, they pay a lot more but expect a lot more. My hiring manager literally told me he works 12 hours/day and that’s normal lol
I can do 12 hours a day for 450k, my G & F's sde ii offers are not even close. Should have consulted Blinders before withdrawing 😂
L4 to L5 is such a recruiter lie in 1-2 years when they've cancelled perf this year. Stay and get E5 - better comp and refreshers. Also a fellow cardinal here.
Good point. Not sure how long it’ll take for refreshers to catch me up, though. Don’t plan to stay in FANG past graduation.
Your base and bonus level will adjust as well
For 9 months u have E4 is pretty good. Any Phd ?
I wish. That’s a distant dream for me. Just a BS CS so far. Working on MS CS. Got E4 promo last half
Why do you wish to have PhD?
Wow good comp and level for 9 months experience!
Good is an understatement. This is extraordinary
So total 9 months of YOE and you've gotten promoted within first 6 months ? Wow
Yes, just don’t want to take the wrong step in my career and blow my trajectory.
Don't take it wrong way but it will be hard to go from L4 to L5 at Google in normal circumstances. (Though you've definitely proven you're above that). Better stay with FB as I personally know 2 folks who made L5 within 2-3 years YOE.
On a side note. How did you get promoted that fast ? What did you do to convince your management to promote you this fast ? Most folks have bootcamp of like 6-8 weeks. So you basically got promoted in 4 months technically by the time next promo cycle rolled in. And you're juggling your MS at Stanford at the same time. Wow FML
Yeah, I was on my team for a bit less than 4 months. I ideated, delivered, and designed multiple high impact projects and solved problems some E5s couldn’t solve, so the promo was a no brainer for my manager. On infra side, so I think ramp up was a lot quicker in terms of reusable knowledge.
But won't staying with same manager guarantee faster promotion since you've already proven your worth ?
Last comment: your only issue with Citadel is WLB but given you're way above average, don't you think you'll have biggest impact at a smaller firm despite long hours which is compensated by almost double pay (in pure cash) at G/FB ?
why would he do Citadel and an online Stanford MS at the same time? Quality of life matters as does performance in the stanford program. I know a lot of people from Citadel and other hedgefunds at FB. Not worth the sweat equity.
Fair enough. I guess in London, comp difference between Citadel and Facebook makes a much larger dent that most young people bend towards Citadel despite longer hours. Though I know some folks fiercely loyal to FB too so go figure.
I worked for 6 months now and still feel clueless about lots of things. How did you gain the necessary knowledge to did all that. Are you just a genius?
This somehow ended up as an AMA lol. No, I’m far from being a genius, though my teammates think otherwise - I’m good at managing perception. I interned at fb before so rampup was faster and I just had a decent chunk of prior knowledge on distributed systems that served me well. I just enjoy what I do and it has paid off so far.
is there anything else that you do differently? What do you mean by managing perception?
Why not Citadel?
Haven’t gotten concrete numbers yet. I’ll be attending stanford ms cs so it’s nice to be able to be on campus in MTV vs online in New York. Also heard the WLB is horrid.
Someone else moved from citadel to fb has commented on blind that citadel was less stressful than fb although it requires long hours As you already worked at fb, citadel might not be bad for you
