Hi, I am from networking background with lot of interest in Python automation. I am pretty good at automation. >>> I don't like technical networking anymore. Can someone please help answer below questions, 1) how are the daily job duties differ from 3 months to 6 months to 9 months to 12 months...and so on 2) how challenging is this role for folks coming from network engineering background?can they compete with other teammates? 3) how respected are swe Sre folks...in G,or are these seen as mostly support teams? 4) what is the bay area TC to expect for level 5? any range? Please 5) is it position worth it....in long term perspective? 6) How's the Career growth & trajectory? 7) Any good boot camps or courses or YouTube channels...that best fit for this role prep? Please comment. Thank you TC 180k 8 yoe #tech #software
SWE-SREs are the most respected ones at Google. Anybody who says otherwise doesnât know what theyâre talking about. You can freely move between SWE and SRE roles within Google. Itâs not the same for Systems-SRE. Itâs highly challenging and at 8 YOE, you should find new areas of improvement and drive those projects from start to finish. If you can build a product, path to promo is easier. If not, L5 is a terminal level at Google anywayâŚjust like E5 at Facebook. If you want to move into management, I think you have to reach L6 first and then do a lateral move (but donât quote me on this)
This is very useful response.thanks đđ
Anyone else...any other pros & cons
I think this is not a SWE role and is different
There are two types of SRE at Google. SRE-SWE which is paid the same as SWE and can freely move between regular SWE, and Systems-SRE which I believe are paid less and cannot move to regular SWE. Sounds like OP is shooting for the former, although I canât say whether itâs a good idea given their background.
