I am 12 yoe, currently at Qualcomm San Diego. TC is ~370k with current stock price. Skillset is HW ASIC in one of the core team. Senior staff. I got a L5 offer from Google SoC team. Location is Sunnyvale. Base 205k RSU is 550k front loaded. 33-33-22-12 Sign on 25k Basically 1st year is 400k at Google. Recruiter mentioned there won’t be refresher until 2025? And meet expectation refresher for L5 ASIC is ~100k? Does it make sense to relocate to the Bay for an extra 30k? How serious is google with SoC development given the recent layoff and current economic condition? Please share your advice and options
30k is very less bump. Can you negotiate for higher numbers? The team is good in case you want to know
Original offer is 500k and no sign on bonus. Recruiter said this is max L5 offer given current economic condition.
Did you tell them that this is hardly a bump and you might have to walk away?
Your living cost will be much more than 30k in bay area
Why no refresher till 2025? In this new thing with the cost cutting?
Since OP is joining in Mid of 2023, they complete one year in Mid 2024. Since google doesn’t give refreshers until you complete one year, OP can’t get refreshers until 2025 Jan. It’s pretty standard and has nothing to do with cost cutting
It absolutely has to do with cost cutting. Google made this policy change only a few years ago. Before that you could get a prorated refresh in your first year, which makes sense. But Google ran some cost cutting measures that included this and a few other minor pay suppression techniques that thanks simply to Google’s employee count led to xxx millions in savings.
Google is better than Qualcomm, done. They use chat bot to schedule interview without HR in the loop at all. Lmao
Are you pe in Qc? 370 is very good in sd.
Seems like gpu
Very decent offer
Short term - no. Long term - yes. Think about the future opportunities.
Qualcomm increases the base by 10-15% if you move to Bay Area from San Diego. The 30k hike you are getting at Google is negligible. I’d say, just inform your recruiter that you are ready to move but only issue is the pay (be ready to walk away from the offer) and they might come back to you with a better offer - but in this job climate there’s risk involved though
100% True
With 12 YOE i am surprised that they gave you L5, here phd+2-3 YOE gets you to L5. I think you should ask for L6 then the pay and refresher will be much higher.
Really? L6 seems to require more from what I read here
You can interview for L6 with 8 yoe. With 12 yoe you should absolutely try for L6.
You should be aiming for at least an L6 position at your current stats. Does not seem worth it at all
