Google L6 -> Netflix level?

Hearing mixed things from recruiters and my network who work there. Leveling at Netflix does not seem consistent. There are some L5 roles which look interesting but I don’t want a decrease in scope. If scope for Netflix L5 is good compared to Google L6 then I would be interested. L6 roles seem to be very few and if the bar and expectations are unnecessarily high, I’m thinking it might not be worth it. L6 IC SWE, 10 yoe, 5 as TL. Meta E6 offer is pending as well. TC 620

Does Netflix still have that appeal left? Heard they dont pay the best anymore. Its still good but just not the best.

Google high-cme OP Jan 12

Culture, tech stack, much more agency given to devs to replace the insane process at large companies, ability to work on externally transferable skill sets, and most importantly they still support remote. Hell yeah it appeals to me.

What do the Netflix l5 and meta e6 packages look like?

Netflix ScreenT Jan 13

I’m probably on the higher end of L5 at around 600k

Netflix adjudica Jan 14

L5 can match or nearly match top e6 packages

Anything in Netflix is better

E6 at meta here. I am interviewing for L5 at Netflix. As long as they pay at least 20% more than now, I’m okay

Google high-cme OP Jan 13

Can you share your current comp/yoe and the target comp that the recruiter shared with you? What about scope?

Netflix midlandola Jan 13

I don’t think Netflix L5 can pay 20% more than Meta E6 unless you are significantly underpaid in your current role.

Netflix 36jRs8 Jan 13

6=6. don’t get fooled

Netflix YJtf14 Jan 13

Ask for L6 at Netflix else take the Meta offer for L6. 620 is pretty much the end of the L5 pay range.

Datadog Larkin22 Jan 14

620k is literally the end of the pay range.

For someone who’s L6 at Google, even if you come in at L5 at Netflix you’ll hit the ceiling both on scope and comp very soon. And leveling up to L6 is really hard unless you have some really niche skill set that Netflix desires currently. Mind you, there is a swath of long timers @ L5 looking to get to L6. So it’s going to be an extremely hard uphill battle. If Netflix is a 2-year pit stop on your way somewhere else, then may be it’s reasonable. I’d suggest wait for your E6 Meta offer. It’s likely going to beat Netflix L5.

Spot on ! Very true

Netflix L6 is hard to get so don’t expect to get it once you come here as L5. There is no expectation nor timeline to go from L5 to L6. Depends what you care about, if just pay, depending on area, Netflix L5 can go fairly high (see levels.fyi). You still have a lot of agency as L5 at Netflix since a bunch of ex E6/L6 from meta/Google were leveled as L5 and the culture is still more geared towards that. However, if title and future growth are more important to you, L5 is probably not a good fit for you.

Google high-cme OP Jan 13

> Netflix L6 is hard to get Promo to L6 or getting hired at L6? Or both? L6 roles seem to not exist on the job board, and even if one pops up I expect that the competition for the role will be much more fierce. i.e. why would Netflix pick me over a Google L7 or someone with 20 yoe? Also, I don’t care about title. I have staff at G on my resume forever now, so even if title appears to go down it won’t really matter. But I think loss of scope would be a very bad outcome for my career progression. Re: comp, I don’t want to go down in comp, and Meta E6 (and maybe staying at G to push for L7 promo) would offer more opportunities to increase comp. Overall I would rank my priorities scope/agency > comp > title.

Don’t underestimate leveling and politics.

You are not likely to get a 6 from Netflix. This has nothing to do with you, it's just that many Netflix e5 are paid 700k+ and they can't get a 6 since there's no business need. They are valuable but overpaid as 5. If one opens up, they will be promoted. It's hard to make a case for you over them. As a new hire, you are not gonna get 700k for 5 either, 600k is likely the max. If that's important, ask the recruiter upfront about the pay
