Just got an initial offer for an L6 PM at Google and would love your thoughts and if there is room to negotiate. Level: L6 (100% remote) Salary: $195K Bonus: $39K (20%) RSUs: $820K (33/33/22/12) Sign on Bonus: 20K TC: $505K (will be $525 the first year with sign on) Experience: 19 years total, 10 years as a PM, 6 years as a PM within (FAANG) Hi all, had some personal ish so haven't been able to post recently, but wanted to come back and provide an update. Was able to negotiate up a bit. Initially, they were pretty firm on base and sign-on, but I asserted I am in a HCOL area and that I should get the same offer as SFO and/or NYC (1. we now have the highest rental and housing prices in the nation. 2. I did reference independent and reputable publications to prove my case). They understood as they did say they were re-thinking the categorization of my location to HCOL, but had not done so yet. Anyway here it goes Level: Still L6 100% remote. Asked for L7 but they focused on my FAANG experience rather than total YOE. Base: 215k. Bonus: 20% Bonus: 885k Sign on: 40k (They seemed pretty firm here). TC: 550k (590 first year with sign on) To answer some questions from below. 1. Currently L5 at Meta. Not a coaster last review was an EE. 2. I didn't really negotiate remote. I told them I prioritized remote, but was willing to relo. Recruiter then prioritized calls with teams open to remote. A few teams explicitly said in-office, and a few said they didn't care where i was. 3. Team matching took longer than I thought because many teams anticipated the hiring slow down. 4. Interview tip. Be open, honest, and unapologetic in what u can/can't (or want/don't want to) do. Had two calls where, they wanted a level of technicality that I had no interest in getting to (they even asked my ability to write/review small tidbits of code. it may have been, or should have been, a TPM role). I simply said I'm more than able to sit, discuss, and ideate, and contribute to eng decisions and even write fairly technical docs, but did not have the ability to write code, and that was not a skill I was interested in developing at this point as I prioritized other skill development. They said the honesty was refreshing and continued to speak with me to learn more about me. They were the ones who actually referred me to the team that I eventually joined. 5. I am in my late 30s. Lastly, about a week after accepting this offer, a recruiter from Amazon reached out to me about an L7 PM role. May talk to them just to see what the going rate is now-a-days. please direct me to any links if you have any.
Congrats! 100% remote makes that a great offer if you choose to live in LCOL. I'm curious: how long did the entire process take from initial recruiter contact to formal offer? And roughly how many hours of your attention would you say it occupied? I have a similar profile and am debating whether to respond to most recent G recruiter request. I just don't want to waste emotional energy on a drawn-out hiring process.
The initial interview rounds went fast and was completed in 2-3 weeks. After i was head count approved, I then had to find a specific team, and this took much longer, especially since they slowed down hiring. Ill also say that the recruiter told me they changed the hiring process after I started, so the team match part may now come before the head count approval part. Hope that helps
Thank you, it does. Team match has always sounded like the most painful part of their process and this doesn't show that much has changed, so I'm comfortable continuing to pass up requests for now. Hopefully one day candidates will be able to interview directly with a team that's hiring, and get a straight "yes or no" answer almost immediately. As an introvert with ASD I'd prefer an immediate 'no' over a potential 'yes' that might take another 6-8 weeks to arrive (especially if it requires any additional meetings over that time). Appreciate you sharing details of your experience!
What is your level at Meta? These seems decent from what I know of L6 Google offers but obviously a bit low compared to new offers for IC6 at Meta. Their vesting schedule makes it weird too in that if you calculate TC using a 25% per year (ie Meta schedule) this would just come out at like 400k a year. Our refreshers also tend to be higher. Still believe this is decent for Google for this level but perhaps others can chime in.
Comes out to $444k
Where are you based out of? Ive seen L5 PM's at google get $215k base....
100% remote, but located in Florida. Thanks for the info, will def keep that in mind.
I'm an L7 with a 205 base due to remote from LCOL adjustment.
Curious what team were able to let you work remote? I’m currently in early team match and curious. Are he offer seems solid but I think base can be a little higher for L6 (IMO and what I have seen here in blind) but all depends where are you based.
It was with the Android Platform team, but several teams 'said' they were open to remote. I am based in florida. Any links to those other posts you have seen. would love to take a read of those
Is Android platform team based in San Diego?
What region are you in? Seems pretty solid on equity, but if you’re in a HCOL region (e.g. NY, SF) there could be room to increase in base.
Currently in Florida, but the role is 100% remote.
Yeah, even if you’re remote, comp is based in part on where you live. I’m not intimately familiar with FL bands, but it sounds like a solid offer to me.
Curious which team as well. Currently looking for remote roles
Feels a smidge low? Definitely lower than L6 offers at Meta. If you are an L5 or recently promoted L6 then this is great!
Upper end of L6 at Google is at the lower end of L6 at Meta.
Pretty good for first offer and lcol (Florida). Op can negotiate better numbers
Solid offer.
For Florida that’s a really solid offer. Mine is only slightly higher and I’m in a HCOL
Congrats! When was your on-site?
