L6?

If you are l6 em, I’m surprised you don’t know answers. If you will join google as l6, I’d hold your expectations on fast promo to 7.

Why? Any resources I should be looking at internally . Thanks. I am already at Google. On track for an L7 promo in September. Joined in 2021 (second half).

Nothing to share in particular. 1. I became technically very strong from day one. This paid dividends later on. 2. Luck factor. Two others long tenured team members had started L7 scoped initiatives and left right around the time I joined. I got them on my plate. They did all the leg work (proposing idea, getting it funded). I took over from the hiring part and hiring was going full steam right at that time in late 21. So while I joined to manage a team of 12, it more than doubled in the first 6 months on the role. 3. Scale by developing your people. Given the rapid growth, I was able get the low hanging fruit of getting existing staff to start managing. So I had two L6 managers out of thin air and hired one from outside. 4. Be ruthless about priorities. Folks on the team were presenting projects under the garb of “Eng excellence” / test enhancement etc. nothing wrong with it, but I ruthlessly deprioritized towards revenue impact while place these on the backlog. 5. Major community contribution. (Think April 2022). I was closely involved with the rollout of something company wide and also participated in a postmortem associated with it. So mostly luck and some being prepared for the role. The two who left, one leveled up at a FAANG type company. The moved out to a different PA to chase personal interests.
