Is there anyone working in Ops for GCP? I’m curious if you have an option for anything other than a chrome book if you are in IT. The onboarding page says if you are not an engineer, you will automatically be given a chrome book. I would much rather have a MacBook so that would be annoying. Tc:$350k
A Chromebook? 😆
All non Eng will get Chromebook. But you can get a beefy one like the dragonfly with 32GB of RAM I think. Tbh it doesn't matter. None of your work will be natively on the laptop other than web browsing.
It matters a lot if you are invested in the Apple ecosystem and like macOS. You have automatic AirPods switching, unlock with Apple Watch, superior web cam with option to use iPhone as web cam, etc. Plus you can install your favorite macOS apps if they’re allowed by corporate
I mean, it is nice but none of these are business critical. The only reason I use a Mac is I can edit hosts file which is needed for work. Would switch to Chromebook if possible.
🤡
There's still escalation and exception paths but unless you have a good reason it probably won't get approved. You might be able to argue gLinux since you're ops and there's value in flexibility there, but I doubt you have a strong case for mac tbh.
Wouldn't you just do everything on desktop/cloudtop in gLinux? Laptop doesn't really have access to much.
It’s a new policy I guess.. 1 year back every one has option. Google penny wise now..
