Is it worth moving from California to Austin? After two years applying to Google job in Austin I finally got an offer. Yeahhh but timing is off. Anyone recently transition out of California to Texas, is it worth it with Austin inflation? Seeing advice if worth moving. Factor in state tax and property tax trade off.
Replace California with high tax high crime NYC. Yes make the move to Austin
High crime is on the way here. And cost of living is skyrocketing thanks to the massive influx of Californians. By the way the roads are almost deadlocked (thanks to the idiot running the city to the ground).. and be ready to pay 2m$ at 3.5% annual property tax.
How many times did you interview over the years? Just curious
Twice over two years it was more a team match fit and the team in Austin was a perfect match. I had other teams but don’t want to be in Mountain View.
Oh gotcha, congrats! I say go for it if you’re passionate about the opp and G. You can always leave after a year. Depends what’s important to you and if you feel like you want/need to stay in Calfornia. If you’re really spoiled with nature, the choice is probably harder. But again, you can always move back!
Why go to that hell hole
Are you referring to the company or state?
State
Not worth it
Why would it not be worth it, curious.
Austin’s too expensive. Yeah SF is expensive too. But, the Austin is having an exponential increase across the board in everything. Housing, food, insurance autos, day care etc. Google Austin office is small (it’s growing but not nearly fast enough) and their stance on work from work isn’t going to give you many options to transfer
It might just be worth it if you’re not too attached to the mountains in the Bay Area. For that TC you can live a lavish life in Austin. The house prices might have increased a lot but austin still has a lot of room to grow and the kind of houses you’re getting for the same price in the bay or lower are faaaar better. The weather and the outdoor things to do are probably not as many as the Bay Area though.
I can tell you that Austin would be pretty bland when compared to California. Commute to downtown is gonna be horrible
If you can get over the crap weather & heat, AUSTIN is the way to go. Your TC is $252k (excl sign on) and that will get you a lot of house. With huge appreciation upside. And no state income taxes (8-10% tc bump).
The base is 141k super low and looked for homes but the affordable ones are 45 min drive. Not familiar enough to know if traffic is anything like LA. How’s the weather and mosquitoes like? I tried to calculate the equity but it’s gambling what that would be after taxes.
Housing is bad. Commute is expected to get way worse. Also there is allergy season every possible month and people take shots around the year for allergies. The city is infra is ten years behind. Almost guaranteed gridlock every weekday in city
Getting a raise coming from LA is probably worth it but I would need more info about your hobbies, interests, and lifestyle to say for sure.
Nice equity at Google! What department / group is this for?
Rather not say since it’s a small team.
Got it but what about the larger team? For example, Global Ops is huge and has many small departments within it. No worries if you can’t still disclose thanks!
Why would anyone want to live in California with their crazy politics and it is so expensive
Austin homes have gone up 20% with bidding wars curious if Austin is just as expensive as California now with all the tech companies moved to Texas?
Not as expensive as California. California house prices went up too along with austin. I’m not promoting austin but the prices went up everywhere. Austin is still affordable compared to cali or Seattle. OP should visit and spend sometime before making a move
