Can anyone from a Google public sector (Ideally gov cloud cleared work) share their experience working there? I'm looking to hop from MSFT and I heard Google has some contracts for cleared work. Would like to join but they don't have any opening for SWE's right now. They have a few "Cloud Infrastructure Engineer" type roles, not sure how similar they are to SWE right now. Any experience shared would be appreciated. TC, org, etc. TC: 160k YOE: 3 #tech #securityclearance #cleared #google
Did you interview with Google? Curious to know current situation you in as I feel like I'm in a similar boat with Microsoft azure.
They don't have an cleared SWE roles open. I heard from a buddy they are transitioning over cleared work to DC and no more devs, only SREs.
What’re you interested in knowing about? A friend of mine works for their public sector product. azure, aws, and Oracle are also competing in this field. Any reason you’re not interested in the azure offering?
I'm currently in that Azure program. My boss isn't the best, and I like the flexibility Google has with internal transfers. My team is way more ops than dev unfortunately. I'm hoping that would be different at Google. I just assumed Amazon is pip factory even with the cleared folks.
2 things to keep in mind: Internal flexibility isn’t really a thing atm, given the recent layoffs and “sharpening.” If you’re assigned to a team, you’re most likely stuck with that team/manager until conditions get better. I can tell you that being a dev on google’s public sector project is pure dev work, and interesting. I’m not too sure what a cloud infrastructure engineer would be doing. To me that screams something hardware/infra setup related. Hopefully that’s helpful. My buddy didn’t want to disclose too much internal deets.
