As mentioned in the title I am post Team Match and headed to hiring committee but today the recruiter called and asked for my zip code. When I told them, they said new compliance rules stated that my county was not approved for remote work. I gave them every county surrounding mine, and a few other large ones nearby but they were all no. I live in a top 10 US city but with no Google office so I'm surprised my ENTIRE area is a no. The recruiter then mentioned that a county 2 hours away from me with 9000 people was approved. My theory is that while Google can't do a blanket NO on remote work, they can certainly only approve small counties few want to live in and say it's a you problem if you don't want to live there. So now in the final stages its basically move to a city with a Google office or don't take the job. Has anyone else experienced this? #google #tech #hiring

How would they know where you live? Are they really gonna check?
My friend suggested just SAYING that I moved to the tiny 9000 person county but never doing it. Or just rent a tiny apartment to show proof of residence. Funny but probably not best to lie to your employer.
I would honestly do it (say you’re going to move but don’t), it’s unlikely they find out. Unless recruiter/manager reads this blind post and knows the situation
Which county is this?
Looks like some in Texas and Apple is doing the same thing.
Ask them for Geo tiers and compensation bands. Move to the one most beneficial to you optimizing for TC, cost of living, family, etc, if you are going to move anyway.
I looked up the avg pay for the Google office closest to me (3 hours away) on levels.fyi and it's a great TC but my taking the job is going to be dependent on how much help they can provide selling my current house and getting into a new one.
No company provides help to see your place and get a new one. That seems delusional to me. Housing etc is all your responsibility. They may have perks that are offered to all employees that you may later benefit from.
