I came to know from my friend that one of his friends had got Staff SWE offer from Google. He had 5 years of experience at a mid sized org and 4 years at Amazon (he started as an SDE1 and currently an SDE2 at Amazon). Is it possible to get Staff role with 9YOE (the job openings says so but I am not sure how it works in reality) and also does his current role as Amazon SDE2 does not matter ? I am not jealous on his offer but I would like to understand what really Google expects for a staff role candidate. How his background should look like? If he is able to clear the rounds how much would his background matter ?
Yes. Yoe is irrelevant. Cross org experience is more relevant, leadership, etc

That friend of yours must be very competent, and lucky as well. I can't comment on the years of experience part here, but the expectations are quite high for L6 (staff), especially during system design rounds.
Yes he is very competent. I really inspire to work with him. And he had chance to work on critical projects during his tenure at Amazon.
Can you explain what you mean by high expectations for system design round? What displays L6 traits in sys design?
