I had my portfolio review last week for a senior interaction designer role at Google. Got an update from the recruiter that the feedback was positive and that I’m proceeding to the next step in the process - team matching. Surprised team matching is happening before on-site interviews.. is this normal? Are they perhaps trying to find a team first cos they expect fewer matches or cos maybe I was borderline? Yes that sounds the right process
I believe it's still a mix on how they approach candidates. I went through team matching process first myself, talking with hiring managers. This front loaded the waiting time that people normally may face if they go through the process with HC first. It took me about 2-3 months finding the team I liked. I prefer this method as it allowed me to know what position/role/team I was applying for - where I was able to make any presentation adjustments and set expectations accordingly.
This is the same process I went through. I think this is better because you’ll know if going through an on-site is worth it or not. The main downside if you’re actively interviewing with other companies with faster timelines, it may put Google out of the running like it did for me. It was ok for me though, because Google was trying to down level me anyway while all of my other offers were at the appropriate level
Got rejection from from Google after portfolio review. When I can apply again? How to prepare?
Your recruiter will be the best person to ask those questions. They will have the most up to date info
Thanks
This is common. Something similar happened with me too - I’m a UXR though. Often times, a stronger team match could work in your favour when heading to the hiring committee
Do you mind sharing how long did the matching take for you to have an on-site?
I had a team before the HR interview (manager was interested, then referred me). Then the HM lost the headcount, so I went to team matching after the onsite and before the committee review. TM before the onsite could increase the time for the HM to find someone as there is still a high likelihood to not pass.
I was surprised to be rejected by Google a while back, considering a designer there had my work in their portfolio, claiming they did it! 😅
Think this is a better process. When I interviewed 3.5 years ago, I passed the on-site but team matching was going to take 3-4 weeks. Had to pass Google and go somewhere else due to timing.
This means the HM that expressed interest and asked to bring you onsite decided that you're not the right fit for their team, but your interview feedback came in positive and they're shopping you around to find you a new team.
@bendici The recruiter told me that he's shopping my profile around rn after passing the 1st interview 2 weeks ago. Do you know if it's because this time is during the transition between Q1 & Q2, that's why it has slowed down? Is Google going through a hiring freeze rn?
About a week. Got updates after I sent a follow up email
Thanks for sharing that info btw! Good to know the process is same for all
