Google and Amazon struggle to layoff workers in EU

https://www.indiatoday.in/technology/news/story/google-amazon-struggling-to-layoff-employees-in-europe-offering-up-to-1-year-salary-so-they-leave-voluntarily-2356991-2023-04-07 Is this the end of big tech in EU? Will they stop hiring there? I know that for example in France a company which is in profit basically cannot lay off employees. What is your experience with big tech layoffs in EU?

It’s not a surprise for those companies. They all know the deal. Anyway, these companies save a lot by hiring 2 EU workers for 1 US equivalent pay

Yes, but probably also the productivity is lower. The collaboration across time zones has a lot of overhead and the talent pool in Europe is not as good as in the US.

Spotify cafedead Apr 7, 2023

> talent pool is not as good in eu If you say “hey, I’ll pay you 50% less than in US” what do you expect from talent pool? This entices great people to move to US for a better pay, the rest stays. Self reinforcing cycle

You can fire employees but the reason cannot be “because of the economy” when you making billions.

Meta vDws52 OP Apr 7, 2023

I'm sure you can close a whole division or close an office in a particular city but not sure about details in Germany or France. In the UK or Ireland it is probably much easier. BTW is Amazon in loss officially? 😉

they can fire low-performers, but can't do mass layoffs easily.

Meta vDws52 OP Apr 7, 2023

I believe even for low performers you need to collect some evidence to support the case.

Google aqua4 Apr 7, 2023

Yep, I heard that it is true in some countries.

More protection for normal employees against billionares, what's wrong with that?

Meta vDws52 OP Apr 7, 2023

It's good but as a result they won't hire there anymore.

Euro here. Laughing my ass off that big dum dums in the US who overhired Euros can’t get rid of them as easily as US or Indian employees. It appears our nanny state superiority has caused some controversy.

For all the US-based ppl commenting on EU employees.. Y’all are hilarious. Americans are legit #1 at pretending to work. You all claim that you’re working super super hard, but the output is nowhere to be found. And if it is, then the quality is so average and subpar. The US is really all talk talk talk, but rarely do we see them walk the walk. So yes, EMEA takes their (legal) vacation days. US just sits in front of their desk doing God knows what. Legit every product is English first, and the amount of bugs, issues, errors are just jaw-dropping. Hard to grow in other regions if teams only “develop” (aka scrap together) for English-speaking markets.

Meta vDws52 OP Apr 8, 2023

Maybe at Google. Also in the US there are not many American employees, most engineers are from Asia or maybe Eastern Europe.

Google oddwaffle Apr 8, 2023

Yeah no this is a Google problem where Americans don’t do work.
