This article came up on my feed today. Agree/disagree? https://www.businessinsider.com/google-meta-staff-do-fake-work-says-vc-keith-rabois-2023-3 From the article: Thousands of tech staffers at Meta and Google do "fake work" and were brought on to fulfill the "vanity metric" of hiring, according to the outspoken investor and tech veteran Keith Rabois. "All these people were extraneous, this has been true for a long time, the vanity metric of hiring employees was this false god in some ways," he said. Later on the call, he estimated that Alphabet's Google and Facebook owner Meta had thousands of employees who don't do anything. "There's nothing for these people to do — they're really — it's all fake work," he said. "Now that's being exposed, what do these people actually do, they go to meetings." Google, he continued, had intentionally over-hired engineers and tech talent to stop them from moving to other companies, a strategy he described as "pretty coherent." But, he added, that meant engineers had been happy to "be entitled, sit at their desks, and do nothing." #google #meta #layoff

A moment of silence for all those digesting the truth and reality from this article.
Define “do nothing” Just opening your mouth and shitting , does that also comes under “do nothing” then this article writers are also doing nothing !!!!
You must be new here 😆
This is a phenomenon at every tech company. The author’s presumed motive is a wild guess at best.
Yeah agree that there are a lot of rest and vest folks at every tech company. Just curious if this is more prevalent at Google and Meta.
IME no, not any more than other large companies. There's always lots of room for useless people/teams to live in big orgs.
Who is planting all these BS anti worker articles? Probably some greedy VC looking to suppress wages. I worked at several supposedly good wlb companies and everyone had tons of work to do
The article is quoting a venture capitalist, good point.
But VCs know how to get assistants to hold parties and then they go spend their parents money being the 5th firm on a series B while also having their fathers be part of a major series A investment
“There’s nothing for these VC’s to do - they’re really - it’s all fake work. Now that’s being exposed, what do these VC’s actually do, they make fake claims to the media.”
They definitely love to talk and make themselves feel important 🤣
This is why I laugh when people claim their TC is a direct representation of their contribution to the bottom line. Like nah, tech is inherently a money printer….meaning a significant portion of the population is not critical or contributes to the bottom line whatsoever.
If anyone watched Mythic Quest in Apple TV, Carol’s character is literally designed to mock this phenomenon
Big Head in Silicon Valley.
Ah yes, "I don't understand what you do so it must be fake."
The Elon phenomenon
I’d say that it’s “pretty coherent” that the new strategy is to fire/layoff people and blame/shame them for “doing nothing” — instead of firing the leaders who made the bad decisions in the first place.
Would definitely like to see more leaders be fired for their bad decisions vs fire employees to increase the company's stock price and their personal net worth.
Why those incompetent leaders are not fired at first?
By what I see here I would agree
Ofc you do McKinsey.
What work could be faker than consulting
