Joining Google soon. One benefit I really liked at Microsoft is O’Reilly’s Safari Online. Does Google give its employees a free subscription to Safari Online? Or a similar platform with access to books and videos on tech? Or a budget for professional education/growth? Current TC: 200k New TC: 442k (1st year) YOE: 7.5
Any recommendations for O’reilly? I have a subscription but haven’t used it much tbh.
There are far too many good books and videos honestly. If you are interested in a particular area, use keywords to search. If not, there’s the much discussed book “Designing Data Intensive Applications” (or DDIA for short) that everybody says is a must read for system design interview prep.
Which location?
Seattle
No, you buy that yourself using the better refreshers you get here compared to MSFT 😆 Jk there is a 1/3rd reimbursement for personal growth upto a maximum of $10k per year. I'm not aware of any book subscription.
Thanks for the info! It’s a bummer there’s no free subscription, but I figured I would buy it myself with the increased TC I now have :D Also good to know about the 1/3 reimbursement thing. Thanks!
You can try coursera and linkedin courses free.
Oh, like they’re free if you’re a Google employee? Or you can try the free trial of those services?
Its free. Not trial.
LOL this reminds me of some bootleg Harry Potter PDF I downloaded from some P2P software back in the day, thinking it was a legit copy but I only found out it was fake when Hermione started undressing her bikinis for Harry and this was like 100 pages into the book.
Lol, I wonder how many more spans before my man here gets banned
Did you have competing offers? What was their initial offer?
I did have competing offers. Their initial offer was best and final.
Did you get joining bonus?
Yes
How much? I heard it's low, would like to know what to expect
Hmm it depends on your manager/director. I get a bunch of things of this sort paid for…
Oh hmm so it’s not a universal benefit then? Mind if I ask you what kind of things you get paid for?
Most of the public libraries offer O'Reilly's. Just get the membership, it won't work with the mobile app though. Eg: Seattle Public library. https://www.spl.org/books-and-media/books-and-ebooks/oreilly-complete-public-library At Google, you can still get Coursera and LinkedIn learning (formerly Lynda.com, since you mentioned P2P I'm pretty sure you know lynda.com 😂) for free
Whoa I never knew about this! It looks like a membership at the Seattle Public Library isn’t the same as the King County public library chains though. I’ll have to sign up. Thanks!!

That’s a solid TC. Breakdown? And did you tell the recruiter your expectation/competing offer first or they came with these numbers right off the bat?
