If you've recently accepted an offer from Google, I have a couple of questions. So I'm past the hiring committee and team matching, waiting on exec review to get a real offer. The recruiter told me the level I'm coming in at and asked for a bunch of info around my current compensation. Here's my question - what are the odds of me getting downleveled in the exec offer review once they find out where I'm at currently? (It's relatively lower). Also, comp - I expect their standard comp to exceed my current comp. should I still expect a standard offer or will it be lower, indexed to my current comp? Edit - anyone have luck NOT providing info on current comp, level, stocks etc?
Maybe that's the question to ask - anything have luck NOT disclosing current comp and promo history and other details they have no business asking?
I did. The recruiter kept asking, and I said I wasn't sure I was allowed to disclose that under my company's NDA. He eventually gave up, and I got an offer that was almost 2x the total comp I was making at the time.
I don't think they'll go lower than their "standard comp" for the level. The issue is if they'll lower the level or not upon finding out where you're currently at.
Do you think I'd get away with declining to disclose my current level and ask them to judge objectively based on the hc feedback?
That's an option, they might decide to err on the side of underleveling you though
Are you sure you want to be at a higher level? Regardless compensation, think about what it implies. If you don't live up to the expectations, that may have a more damaging effect than accepting lower salary and level. Google is not a walk in a park when it comes to technical solutions and management.
Thanks for the perspective - I've thought about that too and had honest conversations with my friends at google and the hiring managers I talked to while in the team matching stage. I think I'm up for the challenge. I don't expect it to be easy but I think I can do it. Also, I think I'm under leveled in my current job and my manager agrees. Product of re-orgs etc. (I'm sure everyone has their reasons to say that).
I gave my details and while the recruiter has yet to give me an actual offer they warned me already they won't match my current comp (!)
Then why bother
because I want to try something different and money isn't the only criteria (though if the offer is really bad I will pass)
Did they ask you for promo history for every single job they've had etc? What all did they ask for?
promo history, stock grant details, bonus amount and payment month, competing offer details,... a pretty insane amount of data

I didn't bother with the details of each grant, just the total unvested and my total comp for last few years
You will be down leveled. Google is popular for that!

Simple answer: if your current compensation is low, don't tell them. You're not required to disclose that.
Yea that's what I'd ideally like to do :S
It has worked for me in job searches. I just tell the recruiter I have a policy not to disclose that. I will instead tell them what I am looking for, if they really want to know, based on the market (I don't pretend it's my current salary, always avoid giving that).
